Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

A big congratulation! I have been there so I know how hard it is to move from wanting to actually doing and finishing! I like the way of reusing an old mac to do this. Also I think that the wooden structure is a good idea, it is much easier to adjust it and it is OK for low power build since the...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Klausi13, schön :)! It is really neat! I wonder if you need a fan on that CPU cooler, is 45W to much for a passive? And what is your plan with the the top part? Do you want to make the balsa legs all way around to imitate MacPro fan cover? Because if not, you should be able to hold the top part...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Luckily mine is silent at all times - and I am a big pitch noise hater too :D Hopefully the second one will be fine. The power consumption is really good!

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

So I´ve finally decided on a passive CPU cooler. I´ve chosen Arctic Alpine 11 Plus, because it has a massive aluminum body and a very low price ($12 or so). I haven´t tried that with fan at all. I´m very pleased with temperatures! The bottom fan is set to 330 RPM and idle temp is about 40C...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Hmm,and what about this: A fan located under the base, lets say in the 3D print or in the adjusted wooden legs. They do also slim versions of the 12cm, this should not be disturbing too much. Than a motherboard sitting on the bottom part with a PSU on the top. The PSU would blow the air into the...

2013 Mac Pro - My variation

Nice  What color have you chosen? You´ve mentioned that you want it black, right? Wonder how it is going to look like!

It was just an acrylic color from local hobby store, primer and color were about $12 both. I am not an painting expert, but I would recommend you to sand it with smooth sandpaper (especially two "seams", they have the tendency to pop-up after painting) then several layers of primer (light sand...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Hi guys! I´ve added some new pics and info to the very first post of this thread, I want to keep it together. Hope you like it! Thanks for being honest, I´ve had kind of same feelings about it :D I am glad to hear that this passive cooling is working for you, this might be the way I will...

2013 Mac Pro - My variation

This is neat! You don´t even have to put the trashcan on it to make it nice looking ;) So what will be your cutting approach? I mean - I don´t believe it would be possible to measure it and than cut it ideally. My plan is to start with much smaller hole and than just put it on, check, adjust...

Wow, didn´t realize how much limited the space actually is. But I should be OK without the fan, but I am still not sure if the passive cooling will be enough... Also, some inner spac can be achive by using sandpaper inside, i can imagine getting 2mm with that on both sides easily.

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Thank you for the links guys, but right now I don´t want to pay anything using €,as the CZK - EUR exchange rate is so bad these days, making it much more expensive. I would love to see this processor as a normal "shelf" product with a normal availability, this sucks... Anyway, I am thinking...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Man you are great! I mean - with the same TDP I will get faster clock speed, better graphic, price is +- the same and it is maybe even more available than my previous choice. Is it the new one or what? I didn´t notice this one during my research on processors. Thx again! :D Edit: second look -...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Thank you for the explanation. I guess I will go with Windows (It is a rude word here, isn´t it?:)) as there is no 35W processor with HD4600 or higher...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Thank you:) Well, the legs were kind of hit-and-miss :D I used 3mm thick balsa (IMHO the best size for this, maybe 2,5mm will be OK too). First, I tried to make one leg that looked about right. I used that one as a model for the rest - just copied the shape on the wood and cut with a sharp...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Thank you for the info guys. But this is really confusing for me, what is the problem with the HD4400? Are we talking about HD4400 + Mac OS or about HD4400 in general? Because so far I am pretty satisfied with intel´s HD line- HD5000 in my GF´s MBA and HD4000 in my ultrabook are doing just fine...

Sascha288 thank you for the inspiration, I am in :D And I am also going to do some changes to your design, I am trying to do low power build: http://www.tonymacx86.com/mac-pro-mods/124213-mac-pro-replica-late-2013-low-power-design.html#post758183 BTW, I really like the idea of turning the top...

Mac Pro replica (late 2013) - low power design

Hi guys! I have to say I was pretty impressed by sascha288 build. And I really like the idea of building a computer that is not just a boring black "brick". Long story short: I´m in! So, as the tittle says, my idea is to build a low power (and quiet) computer. The PC is for the...
