I bought a new USB drive to install Ventura, plugged in the drive and in disk utility saw a drive entry that I mistakenly thought was the new drive. I formatted it then realized it was my existing USB drive that I use to boot Catalina.

I am running Disk Drill to try and recover. If that works, what should be my next steps? Just create EFI partition and replace contents with the recovered files?

As I understand, were I to reboot my computer I wouldn't be able to get it booted. I have always booted from USB drive and never coped the USB EFI partition to the MAC Catalina drive...

thanks

Actually I see that the EFI partition remained intact on the mistakenly formatted USB drive. So I guess all is well?

So you didn't format your USB drive; only a partition.
