Advice on choosing Z390 or X299 for video editing (FCPX)

Hi There!


I have successfully buit a couple of hackintosh, two based on Ozmosis (QUO) and and a third one based on Clover and X299 (ASUS Prime).


I want to build a new computer and here is my hesitation


Do I go for X299 (LGA2066) or Z390 (LGA1150)?
If you want performance the obvious choice seems X299, but I have read the price difference is not worth of it.


Since budged is limited going for X299 means choosing a processor with less cores, while going for Z390 means you can afford a better CPU

What will be your choice for Video Editing?


X299 Asus Prime + i7-9800X
X299 Gigabyte Designware + i7-9800X

or

Z390 Gigabyte Designware + i9-9000K
(being this option still around 400 bucks cheaper)


I will setup a RADEON RX580 if that gives more info


What will be your choice, knowing that I mainly with edit 4k video with FCPX??

I on the same dilemma, and I really convinced to get a Z390 + i9 9900k and spend the money I save from a x299 motherboard + 2066 cpu, on a Vega 64.

First thing it's that i9 9900k it's better general cpu than i7 9800x, not a big difference, but as 9900k its 400€ cheaper (at least here on Spain, i7 9800x goes for 999€) and z390 mobo about 250€ cheaper than a x299 one, with that price difference, the performance difference between cpus become higher.

As I understand X299 is more intended to use with multiple gpu, lot of pcie devices, connect lot of drives.
And as I'm going to use only one gpu, one nvme, a pair of ssd and a pair of HDD, it have more sense to me a lga 1551 system.

Also I think if some hardware fails, it's going to be cheaper to replace.
So for me x299 don't really worth the price difference.

I think you should do more research about X299 platform if you use fcpx to render under macOS big sur. For my opinion if use x299 because of no IGPU so smbios should be iMacPro1.1 or Mac Pro7.1. This SMBIOS doesn't support fcpx to use dGPU such as rx5700xt for HEVC hardware acceleration but DaVinci or Adobe Pr can.
