iMac,7 early 2008 build weird noise

Hello,

I am curious if anyone else has had problems with the older iMac 2007-2008 builds, mine has been running fine ever since I bought it a year or two ago and just lately I've noticed some kind of grinding noise that I haven't been able to locate where it's coming from. I replaced the Hard Drive in it a few months ago and it has been running good ever since, but now I'm hearing kinda like a light grinding noise which seems to be coming from the small round circle vent on the back. I'm curious if possibly the hard drive sensor might have fallen off but that still wouldn't make sense to me about the grinding noise. Since i bought the computer used I don't have any warranty with it. From what I've been able to find searching the various apple forums and stuff is either the Fan bearings could be going bad but that normally is heard from the long vent near the top.

Any suggestions? When I get a chance to take it apart again my first theory was to try a different hard drive and see if that fixes it but I have a 2TB drive in it atm and I'm using most of it so I'd hate for another 2TB drive to go bad on me.

Prolly ur fan bro. One of the fans on my laptop cooler blew out (yes PC Laptops require external coolers) and it was so loud I could not even bear to hear it. Listen near the bottom right (when looking at back) corner and the optical bay and see if you hear noise more out of one side. iFixit hosts guides for both fans on the 20 inch model (link below) but not the 24.

Thanks, yes I hear it the loudest at the bottom right around the power bottom on my iMac ugh, figures finally get my Hackintosh working pretty solid and my only real Mac blows up

I see this quite an old thread, but I'm hoping you can tell me if you ending up solving the issue you had with the grinding noise, coming from the round vent at the back of your 2008 iMac?

I have a similar issue, with a loud scuffing noise coming from around the vent area and suspect it may be the fan.

Look forward to hearing if you able to locate and fix the issue.
