I have 5 drives plus 1 DVD drive in my desktop with a GA-Z97X-UD5G. All SATA. Only one hard drive is showing as External. It also says PCI instead of SATA as the others. This is only using the onboard sata controllers. No additional HD controller cards.

External Icon is caused by having Hotplug enabled in the BIOS.

Thanks for responding. I did have all the hotplugs disabled. But I think it might have something to do with the extra couple of SATA ports. I had the first 2 ports empty (went from wrong direction) so I switched them so that 0-5 are now full and HD's are listed as Internal but nothing in the last two where it was showing external before. Not sure if there is something special with those last two ports or not but ok for now.

Attach Screenshot of BIOS. Do you have SATA set to AHCI?

So the extra ports are marked GATA if that means anything. I will get a screen shot of the bus if you still need it but the ports are AHCI and hotplug is disabled.
