Hello everyone,

Let me start by saying sorry for my bad english, I'll certainly make some mistakes in this post, hope this won't be a nuisance to any of the visitors...

I'm a basic-noob to computer building, I don't have experience on this matter but thankfully I know some guys that build their own Windows computers (for gaming) so in case of emergency I can always ask them for some help/advice... Thing is they've never built a Hackintosh.

I have repaired in the past some MacBooks, mine (changed couple of times the battery and soon I'll install a new Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD & 8GB RAM from Corsair because it became incredibly slow, in the near future I might remove the optical drive too for a 1TB HD solution) and a MacBook Air of a friend, broken display, broken fan, broken battery... I've also repaired and tried to repair some mobile phones in the past. These things though have nothing to do with assembling a computer from scratch.

As I do for motorcycles, I read a lot on the internet before making mods or repairing mine, as I've been reading this forum for a lot of time...

All this boring story is to basically let you know that I might be a handy guy.

As one of my hobbies I really enjoy making video edits mostly from the footage that I take with my action cameras, I've recently purchased a gimbal too... Motorcycling on racetracks, skiing, water skiing, mountain biking etc etc...

Thing is I always have to record my footage at low res and low fps because my Macbook from 2009 is ULTRA sh***y... It takes AGES to make a few seconds video for Instagram for example, it's so slow that I'm almost starting to hate video editing...

So BEFORE I quit video editing I would love to give it a try on a better performing machine.

Few days ago I was looking at new laptops and computers, Windows machines, I was ready to purchase the best Asus UltraBook or whatever it's called with an i7, 16GB RAM and 4GB of VRAM... But having always used Final Cut Pro X I got scared of Adobe Premiere Pro and other Windows apps for video editing, everywhere on the internet professionals say that Final Cut Pro X is so much faster (on same level machines), and things that are slow is what I've been hating as of lately... So I went to an Apple corner to check some hardware of theirs but the price of the machines was so high for sow little specs, and from what I've been reading new Apple products can't be upgraded once purchased which bothers me a lot!

So now comes the questioning part...

What I would love to have is an updated and upgradable machine that runs Mac OS, what I would also love is to have it connected to my 4K TV (do I need HDMI connectivity from the GPU?) and work on it with a wireless trackpad and keyboard... I would adore if it was small too, I don't have a lot of place in my house (that's also why I don't really wanna buy a new/separate/dedicated screen for this computer).

Can any of that be achieved?

I've looked on the internet (mainly Amazon of my country) for some components for "my build" and I don't know If these are compatible with an ideal MiniITX Hackintosh for FCPX usage... Can I ask for some advice from you guys?

Motherboard: MSI Z170I

Processor: i7 6700 (maybe K versione for future upgrades?)

RAM: 16 or 32GB of the best DDR4 RAM I can purchase/afford, what do you suggest? What is the limit of RAM for Mac OS?

GPU: I've read that AMD is the best choice for FCPX. What about an MSI R9 380 4GB GDDR5? Are there any better affordable GPUs? Maybe R7 370 4GB is more "compatible"? Read somewhere that MSI GPUs are the coolest out there...

Case: I've looked at the smallest possible... Think I found a CoolerMaster Elite 110 but I don't know if the hardware will be compatible/if it will fit, eventually I'll look elsewhere, also I don't want to fry anything so I'd love to invest in whatever might be the best cooling for a MiniITX Case.

HD: any SSD will do to begin with, maybe another 250GB or 500GB Samsung 850 EVO, once I end my projects I move everything to a 1TB external HD anyway.

WiFi & Bluetooth: I don't know if I have to purchase anything separately.

Power Supply: I'll look into that later, don't know if it's a priority when you think of a build (what should I look for in particular?).

Will such a Hackintosh work flawlessly if I follow all the indications that are given on tonymacx86.com in your opinion? UniBeast & MultiBeast-wise.

As previously stated I want to invest in upgradable components, anything will be a huge improvement from my current situation, I don't want to overclock anything to begin with, I may try in a distant future.

Thank you very much for the time spent reading this post!

Thanks @Going Bald , I will consider a mATX build too, I'll look into that tomorrow.

In the meantime I've upgraded my MacBook to 8GB of RAM, 250GB SSD and OS Sierra and it works great, way better than before!

I still can't really find feedback on people with recent AMD Graphic Cards.

I typed on Amazon for 4GB Radeon GPUs and the affordable ones (200€ less or more) seem to be Radeon R7 370, Radeon R9 380 and finally Radeon RX470... Which one might be the best for FCPX?

Most of the people on this forum go for NVidia GPUs... Maybe for Premiere Pro/Gaming purposes I suppose?

Last I heard the R9-280X was OOB but had some problems with El Capitan - i.e. sleep would not work.
Have not seen any posts that would confirm is the problem was resolved in Sierra yet.

Hi again, so I've been keeping an eye on Amazon to see what hardware would be available...

So I'm ok with the suggested Micro ATX build, think everyone says that the Gigabyte mATX board is the best out there, I've also found the perfect case, a BitFenix case...

Still on the GPU...

What's the situation with the AMD RX480? Can it be used to run FCPX super quick? Or else what would be the best choice between the RX480, the older R9 380, or the newer RX460 or RX470?

I'm keeping an eye also on the dedicated post of this forum but really don't understand what it's going on...

Does the "boot to black screen" problem has anything to do with FCPX performances once the Hackintosh is started?
