(Success) Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Shutdown Issue - Problem

So I thought I would start a new thread because I have searched every article on this site to do with this issue - and just about every one on the web...

I have some experience with Hack's this one being my third...

My Z77X-UD5H/3770K dual boot 10.8.2 - Win 7 combo is working fine except for one thing... It will not shut down :(

As some others have mentioned here, when I close out of OSX the screens switch off and the hard drives spin down as you would expect - the only problem is the rig then does not shutdown. The fans still run and the lights stay on - Motherboard reads '05' on the display...

Now i have looked at this thread here:http://www.tonymacx86.com/mountain-lion-desktop-support/72466-z77x-ud5h-dont-shutdowns.html and tried all the permutations to no mileage... it also seems that the problem is not unique to OSX as my Win 7 boot suffers from the same problem... also others have had the same issue: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=8973.0

So I did a re-flash of both bios to F14 (have tried F15m Beta - no improvement)
Did a full re-install from scratch of Mountain Lion/Multibeast etc...

What I find is that the rig works correctly - shutdown/sleeps/auto sleeps etc no problem: for about a day - then it starts to play up with the shutdown issue :(

I'm waiting for a reply back from Gigabyte Tech to see what they say - as I mentioned before, the problem affects Windows 7 as well.

I have taken all hardware out and put back again one by one and tried everything including the following:

CPU PPL Disable
Disabling the Marvell chipset
XMP Profile -> disabled
xHCI Mode -> AUTO (not smart auto)
Disable all marvell sata controller
Disable OnBoard LAN Controller#1 (Atheros GbE LAN chip)
Disable wake on lan
Enable xHCI Hand-off (on by default)
Enable EHCI Hand-off
CMOS reset with mains unpluged

I'm thinking about RMA'ing the board for another one.. if all else fails :(

My Hardware List:

Z77X-UD5H Rev 1.0
3770k CPU
32 Gb Vengeance CL9 Ram (4x8)
Corsair AX860w PSU
GPU 1 - GTX 670 (Gigabyte 3x Winforce OC)
GPU 2 - GTX 670 (Gigabyte 3x Winforce OC)
SSD 1 - Samsung 830 256GB (OSX)
SSD 2 - Samsung 830 256GB (Win 7)
SSD 3 - OCZ Agility III 120GB (OSX Backup)
HDD 1 - 2.5" Hitachi 256GB (Win 7 Backup)
HDD 2 - 2.5 TB Western Digital (Data Drive)
HDD 2 - 2.5 TB Western Digital (Data Drive Backup)
DVD 1 - Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S
Wifi - TP-Link 4800

(Graphics cards have SLI bridge for Win 7)

I have attached my latest bios settings which worked for about a day then the problem started again...

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Well Well Well...

The Karma of posting helps me find a possible solution :)

So I started digging around the net for some more posts on Z77 boards with shutdown problems and I start to see a common theme - the Intel Z77 SATA 3Gb connectors...

Also I think to myself that the problem only raised it's head when I added in all my HDD's...

So I decided to move my Drives onto the Intel SATA 6Gb connectors (the 2 white ones - SATA3 1/0) and onto the Marvell SATA 6 Gb connectors (the grey ones - GSATA3 7/6/8)
and stay away from the black ones (SATA2 3/2 + SATA2 5/4) (see attached images)

And the result - the rig shuts down !!! the rig sleeps !!! the rig auto sleeps !!! 15 x shutdowns OK and 15 x sleeps OK so far...

So the issue with my board lies with the black Intel Z77 3GB SATA's

I have disabled the ports in the bios under the ATA Port Information tab (see pics)

I think I will RMA the board as this seems to be an issue with some Z77 Boards

Hope this helps someone else :)

Response from Gigabyte Tech...

Question:
System works fine but fails to shutdown. Windows exits screens go off but the fans still run in case and board is on. Board reads '05' on digit display... I have tried numerous bios settings but they don't work. I have looked on goggle: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=8973.0 - seems that I am not the only one with this issue... Please advise fix or advise RMA for replacement

Answer:
1) Remove the M/B from the case.
2) Only install the basic components on the motherboard – CPU, CPU cooling fan, one memory module, VGA card (if there is no VGA onboard), HDDand power supply.
3) Reset the CMOS once - Disconnect the power cord from the power supply & detach the CMOS battery for 5 minutes then put it back.
4) Power on and boot into Windows. Then shutdown to check the problem still persist.

Question:
Ok so I have done what you advise. I tested and the problem only occurs when any hard drive is attached to the black Z77 intel SATA 3Gb ports. If no drives are connected to these ports then the M/B shuts down OK...

Answer:
Does it happen to the particular HDD? Have you test with other HDD on the same
ports and check again?
Is this a new build or was the system working fine in the past?

Question:
It happens with different HDD's - this is a new build...

Answer:
Please reinstall the Chipset driver and check again.

If the problem still persist no definite answers for you I’m afraid. It's one of those cases that would need to be physically checked.
Please return to your dealer for 2nd opinion or RMA. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I appear to having some very similar issues with my new build. Did a replacement board do the trick?

edit: I should mention that I haven't tested all of the black SATA ports, but I was seemingly able to isolate my DVD drive (also Optiarc) as a potential problem. My setup has the same processor, ram (16 gb only), GPU (1x670), and I have OSX on an SSD plugged into the first 6gb SATA, a 1 TB HDD with Win 7 plugged into the second, a 2TB media drive in one of the black ports, and the Optiarc in another Black SATA port. Everything seems to work fine unless the DVD drive is connected, then OSX 10.8 doesn't completely shutdown. Windows seems to shut down fine still. Strange.

Any feedback on your situation would be appreciated. Would hate to wait on a RMA if it isn't the true solution.

I had the exact same issue. Thanks for your post. Now shutdown and sleep works fine. The only difference is I have DVDROM in one of the black port and that's seems to be fine.

EDIT:

I can confirm what baja-king has written: it's zee ports zet are all messed up. Stay avey from zee black vons and you vill be happy. Now I can shut down wis no problems.

THANK YOU!!!

STRIKE THIS (was only a fluke occurrence):

I created a new admin account and rebooted into it. Problem fixed, but not really, because I want to boot into my original admin account. In either case, what this suggests is that the problem is not a mobo (or the perimeters assigned to it) problem, but maybe a kext or something that is in the orginal account, but not in the second one I created. Any ideas?

Well, this problem occurs intermitently here but the thing is I don't have anything connected to the black ports. The solution for me is pressing the power button for 4 seconds after the computer has incorrectly shut down. Everything will finally shut off then :) I think it has something to do with the BIOS settings but what do I know.

i had the EXACT same problem and i had one device connected on my SATA2 4 port and i exchanged that particular device to the GSATA3 8 port (that one on the left on your image - left from the FRONT USB3 connectors) and B00M ... worked!

solved my problem FINALLY *___* thank you so much, i'd have never thought of THAT! ;-)

Hello, switching the SATA ports solved the problem for me as well. Although I am pretty sure that the initial problem is kext related. I was using the black ports in my initial build for several years now without any problems. When I wanted to update to OS 10.9.4 however it went wrong in a way that all my user settings were lost leaving me with a blank default account. So I restored from a rescue volume. Since the kext files do not get not cloned by CCC I had to use multi beast to install the boot loader and kext files on the restored OS SSD volume again. When I rebooted everything was back to normal with exception of the shut down problem.
I guess the problem was, that I did not remember all my initial multi beast settings and also that the multi beast GUI had changed along the time and was a bit unfamiliar. So long story short I assume some kext file multi beast setting is different in my restored OS leading to that problem. So if anybody has the need to use the black SATAs it is theoretically possible. I myself don't bother in the moment, since I have enough ports for now and the system shuts down well. But I must admit, that I could swear that my build shut down faster before…
