Oh jeez - thanks! I had totally forgotten that kexts could live there, too. Found and disabled two, and the machine rebooted. Yes!! Thanks again; that saved a few hours of aggravation!

I did something to my hackintosh to kill it deader than dead. I wish I could tell you exactly what, but I can't. I was trying to solve a "no audio after wake" issue, and I thought I had rebooted after whatever I had done most recently ... but maybe not. When I reboot now, the machine reboots...

Thanks for the advice, but last night I figured out the problem -- not why it happened, but what had happened. I booted into single user mode, and noticed the timestamp on many of the system files were really wrong. Some were in 1969, others in 2037. The date command returned some day in 2040...

That's the config from the hard drive. The GTX is uninstalled, sitting on the desk. I was trying to boot from the hard drive, after successfully (I thought) running the installer. But it seems the install wasn't successful, because when I boot from the thumb drive, I'm booted into the installer...

OK, got it, I think. (That was tricky, because I can't boot into macOS, so I had to find/mount the EFI and USB stick in single user mode, then cp the config. I think/hope I got the right one.) thanks!
