Also had the freezing issue after upgrading to 10.14.5 from 10.14.
After applying the Lilu and Whatevergreen kext the issue seems to be resolved.

I have a PowerColor Red Dragon RX 580 8GB and it works flawlessly out of the box.
I am running macOS 10.14.
I even ran Deus Ex: Mankind Divided earlier and it ran really nice....
On the down side: it isn't the quietest card out there.
Edit: just checked, I have Lilu.kext and Whatevergreen.kext...
Updated after the second attempt.
I made a disk image with clonezilla (just to be on the safe side).
I then inserted the necessary kext files into the EFI folder, and updated clover to the latest and then ran the update...no luck...it just failed after a restart.
I went back to my backup, and...
I just upgraded to 10.13.1 and had to re-install the AMD8000Controller.kext and AMDRadeonX4000.kext with the kext wizard. After that, a restart and all was fine again.
Here is the config.plist, I have replaced the serial number with xxxxxxxxxxxx.
Addtionally, I just checked how many kexts I need for my setup.
- modified AMD8000Controller.kext
- modified AMDRadeonX4000.kext
- Lilu.kext
- Whatevergreen.kext
- AppleALC.kext
- FakeSMC.kext
- AppleHDA.kext (for...
I would now just sum it up and say the following to get the AMD R9 390 working in High Sierra:
- do the hex editor thing in the first post
- install the newest AppleALC.kext, Lilu.kext and WhateverGreen.kext in S/L/E with kext wizard
- rebuild kext cache with kext wizard
- reboot
And you should...
I found a fix.
When I boot it up with -v boot flag I got the following error, and that is also where it stayed for some minutes.
Kextd stall [0], (60s): 'NVDAgl', 'IOResources'
Kextd stall [1], (60s): 'NVDAgl', 'IOResources'
Kextd stall [2], (60s): 'NVDAgl', 'IOResources'
After looking here in...
yeah I got it working. right now I am at work, I will explain my method later on.
@ruibas
the FB should actually be Radeon and not Greyhound. Also, try to change color profile in monitor settings.
Edit:
So what I did actually is quite simple.
I did this same procedure (the one with the hex...
I had a clonezilla image of my SSD and decided to just try my luck and click on update.
To my surprise, it worked perfectly, no issues what so ever except my ethernet connection. I had to install realtek kext and run rebuild kext cache via kext wizard. Lo and behold, after a restart all was fine.
I have a R9 390 from sapphire and had a lot of issues with it since High Sierra.
But I got it running.
I did the following.
- selected igpu in bios as primary
- connected the igpu to the monitor via VGA cable
- connected the r9 390 to the same monitor via HDMI
- booted with the following options...
I have, no effect.
I now got myself a XFX R9 390X but that one also doesn't work. I now went back to Sierra but the 390x doesn't even work in Sierra now :-(
Gonna put my 7970 back in the computer, can't be tinkering around with it forever.
Appreciate the help.
@RogueFive
