The biggest upgrade for that system is the SSD. That will give you nice performance gains.
More ram is always a good cheap upgrade especially if you're going to have more applications open or more intensive apps running.
The i5 vs. i7 will get you hyperthreading and a bit more performance...
Size and/or power consumption? Other than that I don't see anything too radically different. No 1394 or USB 3.0 options aside from using a thunderbolt adapter. You're limited by the amount of storage based on mSATA.
I am seeing the same thing. I have checked around and haven't seen an option to fix it.
