I guess the problem is due to that I'm trying to install Mojave on an external SSD connecting through USB. After physically installing this SSD into my T440s, I'm able to install Mojave on it and boot into desktop.

Yes. I followed this guide and created the USB installer. I used Disk Utility to partition the drive as Format(APFS), Scheme(GUID Partition Map). Then I tried to install Mojave to this partition. The installation crashed, and the log right before the crash is attached.
