I have found it helpful to video record the process with my iPhone, then I can slowly scan the recording and even do a screen grab. this is real handy because often the screen clears after the problem but before hanging on the next screen.

it wasn't straight forward, but using the information in this post I was able to complete the HS upgrade. Basically I had to turn sip on using CSR 0X0, uninstall Nvidia drivers, reboot, reinstall. there may have been other steps, but this is what I think fixed the issue for me.

I do have a wifi bluetooth card. it is one you recommended, the one with three antennae. So should I delete the FakePCIID kexts or are they needed for the WiFi/BT? I downloaded the current FakeSMC.kext and put it in 10.12, 10.13 and other. It didn't change the issue.
