I have been using dual boot windows 7 ultimate / mavericks with chimera on separate drives without problem.

Now I want to upgrade my windows to 8.1, and I cannot boot from usb drive using legacy mode for some reason. It will get stuck on a blinking "_" screen forever.

However I can boot from UEFI USB drive without any problem. I get the windows 8.1 setup screen but I exit the installation because as far as I know if I install UEFI windows 8.1 I won't be able to get chimera boot menu to work.

If I run the setup within windows it says upgrade path not possible (My current windows 7 is 64bit non UEFI install). So I don't know how I can upgrade/install non UEFI windows 8.1.

Thanks in advance.

I have both 7Ult and 8.1. I think you will find you prefer 7, but would suggest you get another drive and install 8.1 with all other drives disconnected and test drive it before over-writing your Win7Ult.

I am already using W8.1 at work I actually prefer it over windows 7. That's why I want to upgrade my W7 to 8.1. The only problem is that it won't let me launch the legacy windows 8.1 installation.

That could happen if your USB is created for UEFI partition. I assume you still have the ISO, so create another one USB using Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie and choose MBR or even the Microsoft official tool for Windows 7 http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool this also work for 8.1 iso's.
