I was wondering, does anyone have a pro book which they have had for over 6 weeks or so, and the fan doesn't run unless it really needs to?

I do.

I also applied new Thermal Compound Arctic Silver 5 when I was replacing the LCD and now the CPU is about 10 Degree Celsius cooler and after 200h brake-in will be even cooler. The Fan runs only one in a while.
My ProBook is still taken apart (but running) cuz i have to return the 1080p V1 LCD and be waiting for V4.

All this was tested on Batteries I did not try with Power Supply connected.

how hard was it to get to the CPU, did you follow official guide, or found your own way trough ?
i'm considering new thermal grease too.

Actually is very simple, all you need to do is to remove the bottom cover and everything is under it - the fan, the heat sink, the memory and the WiFi minicard. You will need Philips screwdriver for the screws, that holds the heat sink (6) and the fan (2). And that's all. If you think this is too difficult for you, here's the ProBook 4330s/4430s service manual, it goes for 4530s/4730s too, as they have the same interior. The bottom cover has no screws to hold it (maybe one Philips screw under the battery, but there wasn't such in my laptop) and there is a little trick to open it, you can see how this is doing in the manual.

On the topic - my fan is working almost always at constant speed and I think it's the second one (fan state 74 I think), because when I start three or more clips in YouTube, played via the Flash player, the fan goes to the third speed (fan state 65 I think) after short time. Also there is a time, when I leave the laptop idle for a long time, then the fan is working at speed, lower than the second one (you can call it "the first one" or fan state 82) and when I open the lid and begin to do something, the fan goes to the second speed almost immediately.

I was thinking to do the same with the thermal grease and I'll do it this weekend, when I find some free time.

i removed the cover already, i have some experience and knowledge about computer hardware, but according to 4530s datasheet you need to remove basically everything to access CPU's thermal grease...

If you call the heat sink and the fan "everything"... then yes, you have to remove everything. :)

Edit: I've just found the HP ProBook 4530s/4730s service manual and it contains the same procedures, as in the 4330s/4430s service manual.

well heatsink and fan is below the plastic frame (i just checked), so probably i will have to remove entire motherboard which is a lot of work.

They are different. Its SUPER easy to get to the CPU on the 4430s, while you have to take the laptop completely apart on the 4530s.

i'll think of taking mine apart tomorrow, but i probably will do it as my computer is hot & loud, and i have access to service tools and grease now.

Yes, I've just readed the whole heat sink removal procedure in the manual. It seems if we want to get access to the fan and the heat sink, we have to remove the top cover and the mainboard too. Sorry, my mistake.
