R9 280X problems (sapphire and asus)

I was interested myself in the differences between the two models and looked further into it.

I found this website http://www.dateks.lv/en/salidzinat?ids=88937,97918#videokartes-pci-express
which can compare the two models in a nice easy way. The only problem is that its wrong :)

I have the actual box in front of me and it clearly states my model is the 11221-12-20G. According to the website above, the 20G as opposed to the 40g has two display ports. I only have one display port.

The 40g apparently has a different (slower) clock speed as well and supports an older version of DirectX. Since we're using Mac OS X the version skew is not a problem, the difference in clock speed is negligible and for 999/1000 we will never see it.

So anyway, the main differences appears to be output sockets. You should check carefully what you need.

Sorry I can't be any more help.

The 20G appears to be the Toxic version

Is like yours?

Nope thats not mine, thats the 11221-22-20G

Mine is 11221-12-20G, its blue and does not appear to be the Toxic one.

This is the sticker on the box

I think the main differences are the output ports and possible a little bit of speed. I *think* the OC version is around 10% faster (in theory) but its negligible in real world usage.

I've also just looked at the website from where I brought the cards, the model number 11221-12-20G now produces a different card to the one I brought a few weeks ago.

http://www.cclonline.com/product/16...playPort/DVI-D/Dual-Link-DVI-I-UEFI-/VGA2769/

This version looks similar to the Toxic Amazon one AND now has two display ports. I've just looked at both of my cards and they do not have two display ports, only one :)

So since I also got my 280X cheap (£170 or so) and the new model is £60 more expensive, my thinking is that I got the end of one version line and there is a new one out. Some of the other websites (Amazon excepted) do not appear to have updated their information.

After saying that, I can't see any substantial difference between the models. At the end of the day, the manufacturers tweak a clock cycle and change some of the colours and fans. I'd be very happy to sell you my working ones for the costs of two new brown ones. I'd be 100% confident they would slot straight back in and work exactly like the month old cards I have.

I'm confident it'll work.

You do know how to do the EFI mod necessary to make the card work?

Also you don't need to install the card after Yosemite, you can install it and then install Yosemite AND THEN IMMEDIATELY do the EFI mod. One less thing to worry about.

My goal is to do a fresh install for Yosemite, as I currently run Mavericks on a RAID0 mechanical couple of disks.
I bought a pair of samsung 250 Gb SSDs, one for yosemite and all the apps, and the second one to store the temporary FCPX projects (when the media files are not too big).

I will proceed as you suggest, a fresh OS installation with the card installed, then directly to the EFI fix.

I think then will be possible to recover some configurations from the RAID, before erasing it, once I'm sure to have all my settings in place( I do mind most the mail and safari settings, with bookmarks etc...).

The only thing I'm still wondering, is if there'll be some issue because of the motherboard's BIOS update from 8 to 8m, Is there any chance of mis-identification of the RAID form Yosemite (It seems to be a remote possibility, hence in OSX is a software-based RAID)

Anyway, I will report my experience as soon I get the card.

Again, many thanks!

I would take a backup of any data from your RAID 0 system. If I had a Raid-0 system I would be running backups every 15 mins as once any of your disks go, you've lost the lot. Anyway always assume you will lose your RAID, then if you do restore from backup and nothing lost :) RAID0 is only good for performance and I would use SSD for that and the spinning rust for backup purposes.

Since your RAID is handled by software on the Mac, the change in BIOS should make zero difference, how could it? The Mac OS X handles all the IO. However I have never imported a RAID into a new Yosemite install (or any other install) so can't comment how easy it is. Given your expected failure rate is twice normal as you have two disks, you really, really should be taking a backup ASAP.
