Hi everyone! So, I was following the Sept. guide for a Socket 2011 Build. So excited to have it!
However, when I clicked to buy a i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz from newegg, it prompted me to buy the i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E 3.4GHz LGA 2011 instead. I looked like a square deal for 10 buck more, so I bought it, with my complete build.

Afterwords, I noticed that it was Ivy Bridge and not Sandy Bridge. Oops.. Is this chip unsupported? (Motherboard is the recommended GA-X79S-UP5).

I tried to cancel and switch it (the order), but it was too late. So I ordered the correct one as well, and will send back the other when it arrives.

QUESTION. Which one should I send it back? No refund if I open it. Should I play it safe and use the i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz?

Thanks.

Should not matter - the new Mac Pro coming out has Xeon equivalent to Ivy-E with its socket 2011 architecture.

Keep the 4930K and update the bios of your motherboard to the latest revision that will be
Ivy Bridge compatible. As GB said the 4930K will be fully supported in Mavericks. For a Windows
install, Sandy and Ivy Bridge-E chips are equally compatible, the same socket, LGA 2011.

Can you update your bios without having the chip in it?

Or will I be able to use the chip out of box and still be able to perform the update?

I'm a little scared because it will be a 600 dollar mistake if I open it and can't use it.

So, judging by your suggestion, I should just build it like normal with the ivy bridge, update the bios from the boot area (hopefully!!), then proceed to install Mountain Lion?

Thanks for the help!

P.S. according to this:http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=13154.0
I could be in trouble if I began with the 4930K . Like I would have to start with the other processor in order to update the motherboard first. Grrr. Am I right?

You'll likely get the newer board version (rev 1.1) its printed right on the motherboard. The F4 bios is the newest which your board may already have, then you don't have to flash anything. Determine that by
pressing the delete key on start up to get into the bios then press F9 for the system info which should
list whether you've got F3 or F4. If it's F4 do nothing, if F3 or lower flash the bios according to GigaB's
instructions. F4 was just released Sept. 27th, depends on when your board was made, before or after
that date, whether it's already got F4.

If all this is more than you want to deal with, just get the Sandy
Bridge version of the CPU and send the newer model 4930K back for a refund.

You are unbelievably helpful, I really really appreciate it!
Ok, so final question, I am building this for multitrack sound, and video editing. So stability is hopeful at the least. In the 1990's whenever I would choose the latest processor I would often be punished with glitches (Vs. the older runner up).

If it were you in this situation, would you press on with the 4930k? (I'm guessing you would, it's awfully tempting).

Cheers!

It all depends on your comfort level with flashing the bios. I believe that GB board has Q-Flash which
lets you update from a USB stick. Then you don't even have to boot into an OS to flash the board.
Look at this video to see the process:

I certainly would want the newer chip but I don't think you'd have any stability issues if you decide
to go with an older 3930K. It's your call on this. Good luck

It's not so much discomfort with updating, it's that according to that link, if the Bios is at any version of f4 below y, it wont even turn on, just keep resetting. So in theory I would first have to insert the other CPU (eliminating its returnabliity), then update the bios, then remove it and add the newer CPU. Which would be an expensive fix!

Here's one more option you can try. First download the latest version @bios, Intel driver and F4 bios from
the GB site. Make a Windows 7 PE 3.0 usb stick, add the 3 previously mentioned bits of software, boot from that to get into the bios of the GB board and do the updating.

You'll need either a Win7 sp1 32 bit iso or retail DVD disc. You can download an iso from digital river.
Then go to the Winbuilder.net site and choose one of the projects to make your USB drive.
You do have a Windows PC you can use? If not borrow one from a friend or go to a library etc.

Let us know how it works out for you.

I am glad I found this thread as I was about to order the same processor. I've read the i7 4770 will work for sure under Mavericks, but apparently for now it is difficult to get it to function. I suppose I should wait with buying the hardware as it will be my first time. (no experience at all). I started this thread about the configuration I was thinking of.

Doublehead, I am sorry for you it is not working yet, but I sincerely hope you keep us updated, and perhaps summarize some of the experiences? so I don't make the same mistakes ;)
