Intel NUC replacement cases:

I’d really like to get an Intel NUC. I want the Thunderbolt version but I was disappointed that it didn’t have Ethernet. You can get past the Ethernet issue though with USB / Thunderbolt solutions though. Both models seem to only have USB 2.0 though and the there is only one Thunderbolt port on the D33217GKE.

if you don't need gigabit speed, you can use the apple usb to 10/100 ethernet adapter (i'm using one on my NUC right now). it is a bit cheaper than the tbolt adapter, and saves the tbolt port for something else.

i assume intel didn't put usb3 ports on the NUC because they want to push the adoption of thunderbolt, which IMHO hasn't gone well for them yet.

i bought mine at gigaparts.com for $316 including shipping. best price i could find--better than newegg or amazon, but the price includes a discount that expires 12/31. i ordered it last tuesday night and received it on friday.

Hi, how many pins should the RAM have? I know its DDR3-1333/1066 SO-DIMM.. but how many pins?

i believe DDR3 SO-DIMM's have 204 pins.

i have seen specs for the NUC that list compatibility as 1333/1066 mhz, 1600/1333 mhz, and 1600/1333/1066 mhz. there is at least one other place in the documentation where intel has either gotten sloppy or changed their mind before the final design was frozen.

i have tried both 1600 and 1333 memory (one at a time, not mixed) in my NUC and both worked fine. i don't happen to have a stick of 1066 mhz to try out.

what did you do to get wake from sleep to work? did you have to change some of the power settings in BIOS?

sleep: goes to sleep properly (display sleeps, power button blinks) but after pressing the power button or making a mouse click, the power button light comes back on to steady, but no video.

any ideas?

thanks

ken

Hey, i'm sorry but i have no idea. My screen comes back after around 3 seconds.

I didn't change anything in bios (--> default settings)
My BIOS version = GKPPT10H.86A.0020.2012.0919.2135 (pre-installed)

You may like to compare with my multibeast-settings:

I installed my Intel NUC DC3217IYE with OS X 10.8.2 (-v -x)
and used the following multibeast (5.2.0) settings:
- UserDSDT or DSDT-Free Installation
- 10.8.1+ TRIM Patch
- FakeSMC Plugins
- Intel - hnak's AppleIntelE1000e
- Patched AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement OS X 10.8.x
- System Definitions > Mac mini > Mac mini 5,1

= sleep works
(and it still works after adding toleda's dsdt
and framebuffer)

I watched a video review of the Intel NUC DC3217BY (Thunderbolt) and really liked it. I would post a link but I’m not sure anyone wants to see it.

One thing I thought was interesting is that the packaging makes an Intel theme chime when you open it in a quasi Apple chime kind of way. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get the Intel chime to go off every time you powered up the Intel NUC or add / make your own chime,… ;)

thanks for your reply.

i have the thunderbolt version. perhaps there is a subtle difference that is preventing wake from sleep working for me.

mine came with bios 0025 installed. to mirror your install, i downgraded the bios to 0020, then reran multibeast with all the same settings as you had chosen.

all to no avail. still no wake.

i also tried the other two versions of bios that are available--0028 and 0032. still no luck with wake.

if anyone has a thunderbolt version, running 10.8.2, and have wake from sleep working, i'd be glad to know if you had to do anything special.

thanks in advance

ken

edit--after more contemplation, i wonder if the lack of wake from sleep is related to me operating from a usb HD rather than an internal m-sata?

I just received my Intel NUC TH version and I will try to see if Sleep/wake works when my mSata arrives.

NUC Evaluation

I did a quick spreadsheet with the prices ( estimated ) for the two NUC's vs an entry level mac mini. I could not justify a NUC as it just has too many compromises for MY potential uses. What are all of you using your NUC's for or what do you plan to use one for if you have not made the purchase yet ?

For a relatively small ( to me ) difference in price, the base mac mini seems to be a better deal ( $599-560 = $39 or $599 - 491 = $108; again, this is for MY potential uses, not yours :p ) Add a little more and the Mac Mini could boot from an SSD and retain the fast internal HD.

All of this monetary stuff is of course separate from the fun of building a Hackintosh - it is addicting.

Not sure it is economical solution.
Refurbished Mac mini 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 goes for $469 (ready to use, fully functional):
Eligible for OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program
Originally released July 2011
2GB memory

500GB hard drive

Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
Intel HD Graphics 3000

I do not think you can beat that with this bare-bone, not even close.

You are probably right but for example in Belgium you can't find it and even if you do it will be around 469 euro. I paid for for my NUC TH + wifi + 8Gb DDR3 and 128 msata 445 euro. For some reason I still find the NUC more flexible. But yes, in US you might get a better deal for a Mac Mini.

I have a question, might be dumb but here it goes. How compatible is the thunderbolt on this NUC with OSX? I'm asking because I don't see it recognised by the OS and I can only used it as a video output for an Apple screen. Anything else doesn't work (like USB ports or ethernet on the back screen).
