Hi,

I have noticed since upgrading MountainLion to 10.8.2, in "About This Mac" i have "lost" the serial number I have used for a long time, instead it shows this.

Serial Number System Serial Number

Does anybody else have this issue or have an idea as to why its not shown any more.

Thanks/tony.

Same problem here.
No serial number -> no iCloud sync.

Someone fixed this issue?

I believe that if you go the /Extra folder in the root of your hard drive (by typing cmd+shift+g in Finder and typing /Extra in the box that pops up) you should see smbios.plist there. Open in with TextEdit (or Dash Code if you have it installed). Your Serial Number is located in the SMserial string. An example is shown below:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
    <key>SMbiosversion</key>
    <string>UniBeast.tonymacx86.com</string>
    <key>SMboardproduct</key>
    <string>Mac-F42C88C8</string>
    <key>SMfamily</key>
    <string>Mac Pro</string>
    <key>SMproductname</key>
    <string>MacPro3,1</string>
    <key>SMserial</key>
    <string>G88529995J4</string>
</dict>
</plist>

This is the same Serial that shows if you click Apple -> About This Mac -> More Info. Maybe making sure that the file exists and there is a Serial Number there will help.

I had the exact same problem when using the AppleACPIPlatform Rollback kext from MultiBeast 5.0.2

This kext fixes the slow boot issue on ASUS X58 boards, but would no longer show my serial number so I'm now using the native Mountain Lion AppleACPIPlatform.kext so my serial number will be shown again. My hack also goes to sleep and wakes faster with the native 10.8 kext. I now am just settling with my approximately 90 second boot times with my Samsung 830 Series SSD no less. I wish someone smarter than me could figure out a fix for the slow booting issue on ASUS boards. I've tried many fixes from kext editing to DSDT editing and other ACPI table editing to no avail.

If you are using the AppleACPIPlatform Rollback kext, it is most likely the problem, and as far as I know the slow boot bug is only a problem with the ASUS X58 boards, so you shouldn't need to use it with newer chipset boards. I don't need to use the Rollback with either of my Gigabyte Z68 boards, and my boot times are great.

Hopefully this is helpful,

Thanks for the reply.

I've double-checked smbios.plist in Extra folder...

To help finding out the problem, i describe my experience...

Started with ML 10.8.1 fully working with icloud.
Upgraded to 10.8.2 serial number still there but icloud not working.
Created new smbios.plist with champlist, got new s/n and placed it in Extra folder.
No S/N anymore: Serial Number: System Serial Number in system info... and iCloud still not working.

Do you think it's a file permissions issue of smbios.plist? Other Mac infos appears to be updated with new smbios.plist parameters... :think:

You got it!

Restoring the original AppleACPIPlatform.kext i can read my serial number correctly, but my X58 rig has now much longer boot time...

Hey Guys, thanks for the useful information here regarding my not seeing my serial number.

Using the Multibeast rollback my Asus Z77 Sabertooth will boot up fine and all seems to work, except this annoying Serial Number -System Serial Number. I am using Samisnakes amended BIOS for this motherboard and frankly apart from this small and likely cosmetic issue everything just works fine.

That said taking Dil83 suggestion of reverting to the original 10.8.2 AppleACPIPlatform.kext using Chameleon and the latest Clover once the disk where OSX is loaded is selected, it tries to load with the Apple logo and spinning wheel staying there forever with no disk access activity. That said it appears that this board needs the X58 version of this kext to just work.

I have tried many alternatives to no avail, using the much lighter AppleACPIPlatform.kext from ML 10.8.2 it just wont do anything.

I will copy this post to Samisnakes thread in the hope that he might have a suggestion....

I prefer the Asus Boards historically as GB has always been problematic for me (just my opinion) - but this is a bummer as why does the vanilla kexts not work on the Asus Boards?

Thanks for the feedback...

Glad you solved your issue Tony. :clap:

I've no plugins directory in FakeSMC.kext...

So, i removed OemSensors.kext from S/L/E, reinstalled rollback AppleACPIPlatform.kext with Multibeast and my hack is fully working again (but still having trouble with iCloud...) with normal boot time.

You need to use the native 10.8.2 AppleACPIPlatform.kext (not the AppleACPIPlatform Rollback) in order for your serial number to show so you won't have problems with iCloud. See the link above to Tony's post, and in that thread a couple posts down Tony has uploaded the 10.8.2 kext.
