Hey,

I have a external USB 3.0 hdd. When I plug it in to the usb 3.0 port it powers up(as LED comes on) But does not show on my desktop or disk utility. If I plug it in to usb 2.0 it works fine.

Is there any way of getting this to work?

You could try deleting ML's IOUSB kexts and replace them with those from DP3.
They are somewhere on this forum but I don't find that stuff as easily as in the old one.
At least it works for me.

Edit: Found it, thanks to genzai

Hey, Thanks for getting back to me. . .I have just downloaded the file could you please tell me how to delete and replace the files. Sorry Am a bit of a noob at this.

At first move all kext called IOUSB... from System/Library/Extensions into the trash. You will be asked for an administrators password to do so. (By the way: I would recommend to keep a copy just in case.)

Thereafter put those DP3 kexts onto your desktop and run "kextbeast", an application which you can download from this site´s "resources" section.
This will install the DP3 kexts into System/Library/Extension.
(Caution: Make shure not to have any other kexts on your desktop, otherwise they get installed, too. With likely unwanted effects...)

To be on the safe side, you could thereafter run disk utility and repair permissions of your system drive, but I´m not sure if that´s absolutely needed.

Thank you for that info!!! It worked!! =D

Just a quick question is it actually performing as USB 3.0 or 2.0?

Well, good question. System report will most probably indicate a speed of up to 480MBit/s which would be USB 2.0, but as I just learned a few days ago, this is just cosmetic.
The only way for you to find out is to test the speed by yourself e.g. with "Blackmagic Disk Speed Test".
And it might also depend on your board and where you connect an USB 3.0 device.
My board has those VLI USB hubs which do not operate at 3.0 speed (yet), but there are just two connectors connected directly to another chip and not via the hub. As long as I use those I´m fine. Only on those the devices show up as connected to the "super speed bus" in system report.

Thanks for the great info and app. . . I just done the test and these are the results am getting I tried it in all ports USB 2.0 & 3.0 with 1GB stress:

USB 3.0 - Write: 64mb/s
Read: 106mb/s

I also tested my ssd drive that lion is on and selected my documents folder to test:

Write: 127mb/s
Read: 182mb/s

Do these result sound right or extremely slow?

The theoretical maximum data rate of 2.0 is 60MB/s, due to data overhead I assume practically not more than around 50MB/s are achievable.
3.0 goes up to 500MB/s in theory so your devices seem to be at the lower end.

But honestly I do not have much experience with 3.0 and what one could really expect from certain hardware.

I guess my usb 3.0 is no working then. . .I will have to look further in to it I guess

Ah ...no. You have 64MB/s write and 106MB/s read. That´s both above the theoretical maximum and well above the expected practical maximum for USB 2.0 speed. So then you are already into 3.0 but your devices might not be capable of more than you have. They are just theoretical figures and quite a lot of hardware on the market is far (far!) from beeing able to use it. And there are quite a lot of additional bumps that might throttle USB data between devices.

Or do you achieve always the same values both on 2.0 and 3.0 connectors? That would be very strange ...
