Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Thanks so much for this guide. Glad to see it's looking very useable!!

Question (while I'm still trying to read through this entire thread)... did the issues with Thunderbolt and UAD Apollos get sorted? Thinking about building a rig but with the i9 for my music studio, so trying to find a build that will let me do that with stability!!
That's a great question to ask at this time.

UAD Apollo Users:
What has been your experience lately with this device? Does it connect, sleep, wake, and otherwise perform well? If not, what quirks have you experienced?

My official card from Amazon US will arrive tomorrow. I can't believe how fast Amazon US is shipping to Germany...

I'll let you guys know about the results right after my tests... :)
Wonderful! If the new card works properly, I'll have to add a note to Post #1.

No problem — an external USB HDD can certainly be used with CCC to make a bootable backup. The size of the backup disk only needs to be at least the size of the Used Space on the source disk.

ok, thanks for the info. I just saw that my SuperDuper! license from around 2011 is still valid for their most recent Catalina release. I'll try first if it'll do the job. Are there any specific reasons why you recommend CCC? Or is it just personal preference?

Because the Backup Procedure in Post 1 relies on the EFIClone script, we weren't sure if the script worked properly with SuperDuper. However, this sounds like a good opportunity to test it. As explained in the Backup Procedure, the EFIClone script has a TEST_SWITCH that is initially set to "Y". This prevents EFIClone from actually writing/altering files, so it's a "safe mode". We should use this mode with SuperDuper then examine the output log in /Users/Shared folder (EFIClone.log). If the log looks correct (i.e. it identified the correct files to be cloned) then we can set TEST_SWITCH to "N" and re-run.

After reading this thread, sounds like I might want to just plan on doing the Thunderbolt flash? I run two Apollos daisy chain'd and have to swap sample rates often to open different projects. From what I gather the Daisy Chaining might require Thunderbolt bus?

Maybe not after looking at this exchange? https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...-10400-amd-rx-580.298642/page-78#post-2146932

Hello @JonEmm,

Welcome to the forum and good to know the build is running!

Given the recent reports of problems with non-official Fenvi cards, it might be best to do the following:
  • Return the YOUBO before its return window expires.
  • Wait for others to receive their official Fenvi cards and report their findings.
But if shipping times are long (assuming it's not available in your country), then you may want to order an official card without waiting, but this is something only you can decide.

Thanks you for the advice CaseySJ! I'm in the US so shipping times should be too bad. I have until mid Aug to return this so I'll try out the official Fenvi in the meantime and keep my eyes peeled for more findings. I have managed to run Ethernet cable to it so my WiFi speeds are perfect so that's a plus.

We are utilizing a combination of two Apollo x8s, three Apollo x8ps and five Octo Satellites, in three rooms.

Z490 Vision D builds are in two studios and as I previously mentioned, these systems are without doubt the most stable we have used to date.

All UAD hardware functions perfectly. I should also mention, we have acquired the needed components however, we elected not to flash the Thunderbolt chip on the motherboard.

Awesome. Are the Apollo rigs using daisychain'd interfaces? My rig is 2x x8ps and just want to make sure I'm golden. Looking at doing the 10900k with the z490 as well. Any special config tips?

The signature looks good -- it will help us with follow-up replies.

But please reply to this post with the following, so we get a more complete picture of what's happening:
  • List all of the key components:
    • Which make/models of NVMe SSDs
    • Which make/models of SATA SSDs
    • Which make/model of WiFi/BT card
    • Any other cards plugged into any PCIe slots? Any Nvidia cards?
    • Memory configuration (e.g. Two 16GB modules, etc.)
    • Make/model of power supply
Then:
  • Describe once again the problem(s) you're facing.
Thanks
Ok, here you go.

Corsair MP600 NVMe 1tb x2 one for Windows 10 Pro and one for Catalina

Samsung EVO 860 1tb for backup

Fenvi T919 PCI forWiFi and BT

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 64gb (4x16gb) 3600MHz

Corsair HX1000i Power Supply

Corsair Commander Pro and Lighting Node Core.

Problems
1) Photos crashes on opening.

2) In System Preferences, Users and Groups, if I try to change the icon associated with my account, I get a 'Preferences Error, There was an error in Users & Groups preferences'.

3) I have managed to turn off Verbose Mode (Reset NVRAM) even though -v was not present in boot-args. Now if I put -v in boot-args, I can not enable Verbose Mode. I used 'V2-OC-0.5.9-STD-Z490-VISION-D.zip' for my installation.
I currently have 'keepsyms=1 dart=0 debug=0x100 agdpmod=pikera alcid=11 shikigiva=80' in my boot-args.

4) Safari crashes with 'A problem repeatedly occurred with 'https://www.ebay.co.uk' or certain other websites. This does not happen with Chrome. I have tried clearing History, deleting cache, re-installing Java, blocking and unblocking cookies etc but to no avail.

@techfreak85 No special configuration needed. Two x8ps daisy-chained will be golden.

That particular build with the @CaseySJ guide is a Mac Pro.
My advice, follow the guide implicitly.
I have successfully constructed two fully operational systems that are in production at least 12 to 15 hours daily.

Tony.
