USB does not appear to be whole

I got the error "Couldn't copy apfs.efi to destination ESP folder" in Unibeast so followed the instructions according to the troubleshooting guide but I got an error "/Volumes/USB does not appear to be whole" .

I would format the USB stick again on your Mac/Hack and run UniBeast again.

I'm running UniBeast on a late 2010 macbook air with high Sierra. I have tried it with a spare 8Gb flash drive but encountered the same problem.
