Hi all,

I already have a custommac built thanks to all on here and tonymac86, but need to upgrade the graphics card for many reasons but mostly to use with my Apple Thunderbolt display.

Anyone got any experience/rec's on a supported graphics card that has a miniDisplayPort? And be supported in Yosemite which im going to clean install when i get the card.

Thanks all!

Id like to know the same too.. I never use DVI HDMI monitors have always used Thunderbolt displays and cant see any info on this.

Would be great to cover OOTB minidisplayport cards on here somewhere!

The AMD/ATI R9 280/280x/285 can be had with 2x mDPs as these cards are rebadged 79xx cards which are good cards. I did a search of the User Builds forum section and found several build descriptions using this series of cards that work OOB. Depending upon your application use, these R9 28x series cards will do nicely. Stay with the 1st tier manufacturers like Gigabyte and Sapphire R9 280 series cards. Apple actually sold the Sapphire 7950 Reference Design card for the Mac Pros. I have a Sapphire 7950 in my 2008 Mac Pro, and I have no complaints. AMD/ATI cards execute applications that use OpenCL better than nVidia cards.

However, users have posted in the Graphics forum section that the R9 29x series has compatibility problems.

Remember, Apple has not added new graphics card drivers since 10.8.5. So, the AMD/ATI 79xx and nVidia 600-700 series (excluding the nVidia 750 & 750 Ti) are supported OOB.

Updated: The Apple Cinema Display with the Thunderbolt connection does not work with mDP graphics cards. You'll need a Thunderbolt equipped motherboard or a special Thunderbolt adapter card which only ASUS and Gigabyte make for a select group of their motherboards. See posts #11 & #14.

Hey Stork/Guys,

Thanks for the tip, though Ive now bought and installed a 7970/R9 280x but still exactly the same problem. Only the DVI port is currently recognised.. the other ports dont do anything.

Can anyone help? Need my thunderbolt display :)

Something to do with AtiPorts= maybe?

Stork are you running an Apple Thunderbolt display from one of these GPUs?

Good modding,
neil

Ive now also tried various Clover boot flags, ATI=True, AtiConfig=, FBName=Aji etc. No luck.

Ive disabled Integrated Intel Graphics in bios as it wont boot without it disabled for some reason.

Any further help appreciated..

No, I don't have an ACD with a Thunderbolt connection; nor do I an R9 280/280x/285. I use a mDP to DVI adapter to a Dell U2711 with the 7950 because I use a dual-link, dual view KVM switch.

What's the make and model of your 280x? Does it look like the AMD Reference Design 280x, port wise?
