Migration Assistant [SOLVED]

Hi,

I've successfully installed El Capitan with Clover in Legacy Mode, however I'm having difficulty migrating my old Yosemite backup using OSX's migration assistant. The migration is a success but I can't boot into it.

Does anyone know how the migration affects the system? It seems that when migrating the 'User Account' section some of the system startup files are affected. If I only migrate the remaining sections then no problem and the system doesn't even require a restart.

Thanks,
Alex

Migration Assistant [SOLVED]

After further experimentation, it appears that the offending part of the migration assistant is the "Other files and folders" under the "Documents & Data" section. Leave that unchecked and no problems.... at least in my case.

Doing an online search revealed this about "Other files and folders"...

"Basically, anything at the root level of the source volume not included in the standard Applications, Library, System, & Users folders. For instance, say you have created a root level folder named "Extras" for some miscellaneous files you don't want to keep in any user account's home folder. None of the other options of Migration Assistant would transfer this folder, so the "Other files and folders" option gives you that capability"

Well that does explain a lot..... and hopefully this post saves my fellow hackintoshers time messing around.

Have a nice day,
Alex.

Thank you very much!

I had the same problem. After restoring my time machine backup from my mavericks hackintosh I also wasn't able to boot anymore. So I installed El Capitan once more, used the migration assistance again and unseleted the "Other files and folders" before migrating. Now everything works fine :D Thanks!

OMG thanks so much for this post! I had been pulling my hair out (what's left of it anyway) over this and had to reinstall OS X at least twice before I found this advice.

Unchecking "Other files and folders" in Migration Assistant did the trick, and now I have a fully functional Sierra mackintosh.

Thanks!!! :beachball:
:headbang:

Mixed results here migrating from Sierra to High Sierra.

When I do a full Migration Assistant, but with Other files and folders unchecked I still get a no boot.

This hint does work if I do a minimal migration (ie all the options unselected) (including the Other Files and Folders unchecked).

---

BTW I did fix my full Migration by building another drive with minimal migration. Then I compared the folders in /System/Library/Extensions and /Library/Extensions. I cleared out the differences in /S/L/E/ and no boot. Then I cleared out /L/E - there was a bunch of older stuff from some stuff I have installed over the yeas in /Library/Extensions and I removed them all (including Boom2Device, GPUSensors, Lilu, ufsd_NTFS, LPCSensors, hp_io_enabler_compound). This older stuff certainly was from Migration Assistant.

Not sure what the problem was, but after clearing out the second (/L/E/) folder the hard drive would boot again.

PS One more tip. The machine wouldn't boot directly. If I used Safe Mode it would work, but that is annoying. What did work was to boot into Single User mode. Then 'exit' from that, which boots the machine (not going thru BIOS) and it would boot up.

Not sure what the difference is, but in Safe Mode the video is VERY slow. Booting from Single User mode the video is fast.
