Hello guys,

I recently made a PowerMac G5 casemod. I had a functioning Hackintosh up and running already but in a basic case - exactly why I wanted to place my existing hardware in the G5 case. The only piece of hardware that didn't function properly was my DVD drive. It was an old one so I replaced it with the DVD Superdrive found in the original G5 (2004) case. After everything was built in I started my Hackintosh, assuming that the DVD Superdrive would work out of the box. However, it didn't.

Does anyone know how I can get this DVD drive to function properly? Or can't I?

Thanks in advance,

Thijmen.

If the SuperDrive has a sata connection then it should work. Try a different cable/BIOS settings and a different sata port on the motherboard.

If the SuperDrive is pata (multi pin ribbon cable) then it will not work with OS X and will need to be changed for a sata model. These are inexpensive to purchase new but many people do not use them these days so it sould be easy to pick one up from a friend/neighbor/family member.

Yes it is pata indeed. Thank you for your help. I'll see what I can do. :)

Tjij you could try using a "IDE to SATA" adapter with your DVD drive. I did this on one of my early G4 Cube hacks and the drive worked with OS X.

The issue that I discovered that caused me to upgrade the drive was the original IDE interface (PATA) drive was not dual layer capable.

So in my case it would have been less expensive to just shop for a reasonably price RW Dual Layer DVD drive and not spend on the adapter.

Good modding,
neil
