I have recently updated to 10.9.2 with no problems. I just purchased a Western digital Elements 1TB USB 3.0 portable external drive.
When plugged in to the USB 3.0 port it appears, and is accessible, but if I run a program (usually from the dock), it freezes the whole machine, and I have to reset. I booted from an identical build of Mountain Lion using the same DSDT file, same settings and the drive works perfectly yet there is no kext in ML extensions related to USB 3.0 that I can find. I removed the generic kext on the Mavericks build, and now the drive doesn't even show up, and no freeze. I can't figure out how the drive even works in ML without a kext. I'm stumped.
I am running a Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V Rev2.0 Bios F4 with a custom DSDT not created by me. I have tried using Chameleon and other software to extract my own working DSDT, so far unsuccessfully. The DSDT was made by someone else with an identical board, and is has worked flawlessly. I read somewhere here that the generic USB3 kext in MultiBeast was modified from a LaCie kext. Could it be that it fails with WD drives? Why then would it work in ML with the same hardware and no kext?
The drive works fine in USB 2.0 mode, and It's the only USB 3.0 device I have to test with so far. Hope someone can help me.
Also, The Mavericks build is booting from an SSD, and the ML is running off a standard HDD, if that makes any difference.
