Hello everyone,

After a bit of research where I found some guys recommending this Rosewill card reader: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820223119

Looked good to me, so I searched elsewhere to see if I could get it from Europe and found this ICY BOX one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00780XERG/?tag=tonymacx86-21

It looks exactly the same so I ordered it. It's funny only after I got it I noticed the labels on top of the slots were not exactly the same on those two products. The first one supports SDHC and the other doesn't. Funny enough the one that I got has the labels exactly as the first one, so it's supposed to support SDHC and SDXC.

After connecting it to a free USB 3.0 header on the motherboard the first thing I tried was the USB port on the panel. I don't have a USB 3.0 device at the moment but a regular USB 2.0 stick worked fine. It didn't light any of the LEDs though...

After that I went for the card slots and that's where the problem begins...

None of the slots I tried worked, that includes: CF, SD and Micro SD slots.

I tried a Sandisk Extreme Micro SDHC 32GB with 80MB/s read and 50MB/s write, an old Kingston SDHC Class 4 16GB and an even older Kingston CF 1GB. All cards are working and in use at the moment.

This is what I see on the System Information:

I have a Logitech G500 mouse, Apple Keyboard and UPS connected, nothing else pops up.

Since the USB port on the card reader works fine I suspect it might be drivers, but I thought these card readers didn't need anything. What am I missing here?

So that means the problem here is not the card reader, but the USB 3.0 ports?

How can I make sure I have those properly working? I don't have a USB 3.0 device with me at the moment.

Update:

Followed this guide (http://www.tonymacx86.com/hardware-troubleshooting/95626-enabling-usb-3-ga-z77x-ud5h.html) and apparently it did solve the USB 3.0 problem.

I can now see Superspeed ports:

But it still can't read any cards. It says "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" whenever I insert a card.

And because of those BIOS changes, the computer now reboots everytime I want it to shutdown. It's not a big of a deal for me, if only I could read cards with it.

Update:

Looks like I'm getting closer, but not there yet.

Followed this guide (http://www.tonymacx86.com/customization/74471-how-make-generic-driver-any-card-reader.html) to make a generic card reader driver, installed driver, repaired permissions and rebuilt cache. Reboot and still nothing...

The good news is that it is now recognised as a proper card reader. It just can't read cards.

The card itself is in FAT32 as you can see, why the hell wouldn't it be "readable"?

Anyone has a clue why does the "not readable" error happens?

Just an update. :headbang:

Don't actually know what did it, but here's what I did:

- put the card into the reader's slot = "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" error
- clicked "initialize" on that dialog box (disk utility pops up)
- selected the device on the list (the card itself, not the partition)
- went to the "partition" tab
- selected 1 partition, exfat
- apply = error, something about the last sector of the disk
- redone the partition steps
- all went well and the card was for the first time mounted and working

- put it back on my gopro
- SD ERROR
- format it on the gopro
- take some photos
- put the card back in the reader's slot
- card mounted on the desktop with read and write permissions

If you connect your gopro with the USB port you can only read from it, which sucks!

And so this battle ends with a win for perseverance. Now I can use the full speed of the card and I'm not tied down to the USB 2 speeds, and can also delete the files I don't need from the card without the need for reformatting it on the gopro.

Ha! worked for me, too! Thanks
