I've built a new rig for 10.9 and did a clean install according to common guides. However - after a short time (2-15 minutes) my system completely freezes. No beach ball. No kernel panic. Everything just grinds to a halt but stays visible on my screens.

Installation procedure

Hardware

  • Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H (f5)
  • Core i7 4770K
  • PSU Corsair HX 650W 80+
  • Corsair 16GB (4-KIT) DDR3 Vengeance XMP 1,3 1,5V
  • SSD 240GB Corsair SATA 2.5", Force 3 Series
  • 2x 2TB Seagate SATA-600 Green ST2000DL003
I've tried the following

  • Running a bare minimum system. No HDs. No front USB connector. One monitor.
  • Upgraded to latest FakeSMC using Kozleks HWSensors
  • Downgraded AppleIntelE1000e.kext to hnaks's 2.4.14 using Multibeast 5.4.0.
  • My Corsair HX 650W (bronze) might not be Haswell compatible according to Corsair, so I disabled C6/C7 (and C3) states in the Bios.
  • I disabled C-States followed by P-States in org.chameleon.Boot.plist.
After each single step I've tried running my system, but never succeeded for more than a maximum of 15 minutes. It just hangs. Resulting in no other option than to hard reset.

When I've been running Prime95 (
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/) I've noticed that the system does not crash. For the most I've ran it over night and woke up to a running system.

Could it be that somehow it crashes when the CPU has too little to do? Why? How could I remedy it?

I'd love to get some experienced help. Cheers! // Mikael

ps. The problem is described in this thread as well, but I started this new one since it seems I narrowed the problem down to this "idling" issue.

[Edit] By the way - the system runs fine booting into Windows 7 64 bit.

Try increasing the memory voltage by .1. I increased mine from 1.5 to 1.6 and was able to run w/o it freezing. Give that a try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never done any overclocking at all. Under what menu in Uefi/BIOS should I look for that setting? Are there any possible side effects?

[edit] Found it. Trying. Testing.

I tried upping the RAM voltage to 1.6 and then 1.65V. In both cases the system hung just as before. Guess that wasn't it on my system. :|

I'm attaching two screen captures from HW Monitor. One where the CPU runs at 3.5GHz and one at 800MHz. I don't really know what to make of the different numbers. Maybe someone else does.

Still greatly thankful for anyone trying to help me out.

Cheers,
/Mikael

I was hoping that Multibeast 6.0.1 would magically remedy my problems. But, no. I still get a frozen system within minutes of booting.

Would still love help and suggestions.

Cheers, people!
