So . . . . while putting the finishing touches on a few Hackintosh's I'm building as gifts for the upcoming holiday, I ended up buying and testing 4 different Bluetooth dongles/adapters on several Hack configurations. I figured, "WHY NOT?" I tested the dongles/adapters on the following 5 builds:
- Z77X-UD5H w/ Xeon E3-1230 v2
- Z77-DS3H w/ i5-3570K
- H61N-USB3 w/ i5-3450
- H61N-USB3 w/ i3-3245
- H87M-D3H w/ i5-4670K
THANKS TO FRY'S ELECTRONICS' AMAZING RETURN POLICY WHICH ALLOWED ME TO "TRIAL BY STONE" THESE LITTLE BASTARDS WITH NO STRESS AT ALL.
ALL DONGLES/ADAPTERS BELOW ARE LISTED IN THE BLUETOOTH ADAPTER DATABASE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE (The Cirago BTA3310), HOWEVER, SINCE UPDATING TO MAVERICKS, A FEW THINGS HAVE BECOME COMPATIBLE, WHILE OTHERS HAVE LOST SAID COMPATIBILITY . . OR HAVE BECOME "PROBLEMATIC". HOPEFULLY THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WILL BE USEFUL FOR SOME FOLKS.
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FOR MAVERICKS (10.9) ONLY!! I WAS LOOKING FOR NATIVE, OUT OF BOX (O.O.B.) SUPPORT ONLY, HENCE, I DID NOT INVESTIGATE INSTALLING ADDITIONAL KEXTS TO GAIN FUNCTIONALITY.
(THIS INFORMATION MAY OR MAY NOT APPLY TO MOUNTAIN LION (10.8.X), AS I ONLY CONDUCTED TESTS ON SYSTEMS RUNNING OS X 10.9 MAVERICKS)
1. Manufacturer: SABRENT
Model: BT-USBT
VERDICT: Works O.O.B., WAKES FROM SLEEP, however, creates MOUSE CURSOR DRAG, but oddly, only on 1155 systems. 4 separate times, 4 separate systems, same drag occurs after about 10 minutes; and ceases instantly upon removing the dongle. It did not have this problem on the Haswell rig at all, WOKE FROM SLEEP (keyboard, mouse, & trackpad), and was pretty much flawless in its operation ON THE HASWELL BUILD ONLY (has mediocre range).
2. Manufacturer: Kensington
Model: K33902US
VERDICT: DOES NOT WORK NATIVELY. It's listed in the database, but is the only dongle/adapter listed that has no information. DID NOT WORK O.O.B. ON ALL 5 SYSTEMS. Perhaps needs a kext.
3: Manufacturer: Cirago
Model: BTA3310
VERDICT: THIS IS THE ONE!! WORKS O.O.B. NATIVELY, WAKES FROM SLEEP, IMPRESSIVE RANGE FOR ITS SIZE. This adapter is not listed on the database, however it's predecessor, the BTA3210 is. I can confirm this works on all 5 systems, so I'll look into how to update the database with this model. ADVICE: BUY SOME ELECTRICAL TAPE, AS IT HAS A FLASHING BLUE LIGHT THAT IS CONSTANT, EXTREMELY BRIGHT, AND CANNOT BE SHUT OFF!! This is not a reason to avoid this model, but be warned . . it's ANNOYING AS S@#!. A little 1" piece of electrical tape does the trick though.
4: Manufacturer: PPA
Model: PPA USB Bluetooth Adapter v2.0+EDR
VERDICT: Database is accurate on this model. Works O.O.B., but does not wake from sleep.
Well there y'all go. Hope you found this information useful.
