Successful Upgrade of Yosemite to El Capitan using Clover Direct Install Method

I am now running on El Capitan upgraded from Yosemite.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R
Video: PNY GeForce GT430
I basically followed the steps listed in the post titled "Direct Update to OS X El Capitan using Clover" with a few changes.
Here are the steps I followed:
1) Download and installed Clover r3292
2) Download the following kexts using the link in the post and copy to EFI/CLOVER/KEXT/OTHER folder
FakeSMC.kext
NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
RealTekRTL8111.kext ( I have RealTek8111C Lan version)
3) Delete all folders in EFI/CLOVER/KEXT except for the "other" folder
4) Edit config.plist in EFI/CLOVER and insert the following:
<key>RtVariables</key>
<dict>
<key>BooterConfig</key>
<string>0x28</string>
<key>CsrActiveConfig</key>
<string>0x3</string>
</dict>
5) Search for string "smbios" in config.plist and replace the following:
<dict>
<key>#BiosReleaseDate</key>
<string>05/03/10</string>
<key>#BiosVendor</key>
<string>Apple Inc.</string>
<key>#BiosVersion</key>

with the following:

6) I had a DSDT file for my motherboard in Yosemite so I copied it to EFI/CLOVER/AFI/PATCHED
7) Start install of El Capitan
Note: Before allowing the restart to continue....
8) Removed the following from System/Library/Extensions folder
AppleNullCPUPowerManagement.kext
Evoreboot.kext
9) Repair Permissions and Rebuild cache using Kext Wizard
10) Restart to continue install and selected "Install from OSx drive"
11) Once El Capitan completed install and restarted, selected "Boot from OSx drive"
12) Success!
Internet working
Display working
Sound working
Still testing....

Thanks, big big thanks! I'm working on my GA-EP45, with no success so far following the standard directions, not the "Direct Update"--it really helps to have so much info.

You are very welcome! Using the "Direct Method" install went smoothly. Do you have a GA-EP45-UD3R or GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard?

I have the GA-EP45 UDP3 board, but they're pretty similar.

Could I ask a favor of you? Exactly what boxes did you click on in the Clover installer? I'm trying to make sure I've got that right....

Thanks!

Sorry, I just got your message. I used the UD3R box. I have Yosemite on the UD3P but haven't tried to upgrade it to ElCapitan yet

In terms of the check boxes in the Clover installer, I don't think it makes any difference between the two boards. Can you let me know which check boxes you used for your board? Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by "which check boxes I checked" in the clover installer. What check boxes are you referring to? I didn't have to check any boxes in the Clover install. I also didn't have to add any drivers and didn't have to do anything to get my video card to work. I have an NVIDIA Geforce GT430 video card. I did download the DSDT file from the tonymac site for my motherboard. I made sure it was in the EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/PATCHED directory as I mentioned in my instructions.

Make sure that right after you install clover that you start the install of ElCapitan and then follow my instructions for installing the DSDT file, the 3 kext files in my instructions, update the config.plist and delete the kext files, before you restart for the upgrade, as I described in my initial post.

I have the same motherboard with a nVidia GeForce 670 VC. Currently running Yosemite with all specs, dual-monitors, internet accounts and so on. I tried to do the direct update method from the guide, went all superficial as usual and almost lost the whole thing (I did get it to boot in El Capitan, but got kernel panic almost immediately, 15 secs at the most). Then recovered it all with the same Yosemite Unibeast I can re-make in Windows :thumbup:, used an old Windows 7 Install DVD :clap: to delete the EFI partition and got my Yosemite back :headbang:! I got more details on that recovery if anyone needs.
Anyway, the issue was I hadn't done the Clover Compatibility test from http://www.tonymacx86.com/basics/171680-clover-basics-switching-advice.html#1. And having tried that, I didn't think my MB was ok with clover. Anyway, since Yosemite is working so well, I left it alone.
The thing is, I was thinking of trying a test USB with the Clover config from your suggestion (same MB after all, close VC too). Do you think it's a good idea? I'll try it anyway and post the results, if anyone is interested or something goes wrong :confused:... Wish me luck!

I initially tried with a USB but could never get the upgrade to work. I kept running into different problems. So I upgraded without using usb. I installed Clover on Yosemite and started the upgrade to ElCapitan from within Yosemite and it worked well for me.
