System description:

Gigabyte EP45-DS3R w Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz, 4GB 800 MHz DDR2, XFX Ge-Force 8800 GTS, Dell DVI display at 1600 x 1200, USB mouse and keyboard. A single 250 GB hard disk with two 100 GB partitions.

Background: This system is one of my legacy test beds that lives on a shelf most of the time. I dust it off several times a year and fire it up to check some problem or feature. Today it is to install the newly released El Capitan 10.11.

My starting point was a 250 GB hard drive that had an old version of Clover and Yosemite 10.10 that booted and ran fine.

I ran the 10.10.5 combo update just to get current.

Then I down loaded MultiBeast 7.5.0.

Using MultiBeast, I installed FakeSMC.kext 6.18.1394, Hardware Monitor and related plugins. I also installed VoodooHDA v0.2.1.

I configured the Hardware Monitor to reflect the core temps and speed multiplier. And checked out the audio by setting up iTunes.

Video acceleration is working.

I then downloaded Clover v3270 and ran the Clover update, Legacy mode to the existing installation in the /EFI partition. I pulled over my config.plist that I used on the EX58 build (see attached copy), and configured the kexts to reside in the other folder. I deleted all of the numbered kext folders.

I followed this guide to clean up the Yosemite installation: http://www.tonymacx86.com/basics/171680-clover-basics-switching-advice.html

At this point, I could boot Yosemite with Clover v3270 with the supporting kexts being in the “other” folder in the /EFI partition.

I then downloaded El Capitan from the App Store, quit out of the install, and cloned Yosemite to the second partition using SuperDuper!. Rebooted to the clone to insure that it was a good copy. Then booted back to the primary partition.

The Clover config.plist file is set to auto boot the partition named “MHD” which in this case is the primary partition on the hard drive.

At this point in the process, the system is prepped and ready to install El Capitan and the objective is a hands free install.

Click on “/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app” and start the installation. At the restart, you will need to select the “Boot OS X Install from MHD” partition in the Clover boot menu.

Sit back and wait as the process runs. At the end (after several restarts) you will be prompted to enter the setup information and your are done…

My system completed properly the fist time that I ran this process and did not require additional work.

I should note that in Yosemite, sleep works, wake from sleep works, however shutdown does not work.

In El Capitan, SLEEP SHOULD BE AVOIDED as it will most like require a CMOS reset to recover.
Shutdown also does not work.

These short comings can probably be corrected or minimized if you generate DSDT.aml and or SSDT.aml files. I don’t do that for my lab machines.

Good modding,
neil
