Friends,
After posting my idea for my first machine. It seems as if I have over built a machine for my needs. I've taken your comments and suggestions and come up with a smaller and less expensive machine that should support my needs. Aside from the usual daily computer tasks, I will be using it for light music production, music writing, and the occasional corny video game. I would love if you would take a look at this build and let me know what you think. This will be my first time ever building a computer and my first Hackintosh!

Thanks for your help!

Here is what I came up with:

Case:
Corsair Obsidian Series 250D (CC-9011047-WW) Black Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-H97N-WIFI LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Power Supply:
CORSAIR CSM Series CS550M 550W ATX12V v2.4 and
EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Video Card:
EVGA GeForce GT 740 02G-P4-3747-KR 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Video Card

Processor:
Intel Core i5-4690K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1150 88W BX80646I54690K Desktop Processor Intel
HD Graphics 4600

HDD:

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E250B/AM

RAM:

Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT4G3D1608DT1TX0

ODD:
LG Black Blu-ray Burner SATA WH16NS40 - OEM

Wireless:

TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter, 2.4 GHz 450 Mbps / 5 GHz 450 Mbps, IEEE 802.1a/b/g/n, WEP ...

Hi jonplaysdrums,

Just wanted to say (probably like many others) I've been running that same motherboard/CPU/SSD combination for 9 months with Yosemite and it's been great. Perfect power management, sleep, wake, and stable. Even with a little overclock on 2 of the CPU cores. And it seems people have had no problems going to El Capitan I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

More to the point, I've been running it as an audio workstation with Logic Pro X and a good selection of plugins and it's really delivered. Plenty of headroom, although of course Logic prefers to have nothing else running even on the beefiest hardware.

Also, when I'm critically listening I don't like extraneous sound so I went for a slightly hacky but completely silent build:

Cooling: Zalman FX70 Fanless Cooler
PS: knock-off PicoPSU (160W) and a 120W 12V power brick for LED light strings
Case: Thermaltake Core V1 case, fan off, top plastic window popped out for heatsink headroom.

And no GPU card obviously...can't have any moving parts! :)

I was skeptical when I tried it but the Zalman FX70 in such an open airflow case really does dissipate 85W.

Again, a little hacky depending on your standards but I'm totally pleased.

Ah perfect! Another audio guy! That build is a little small for me as I'm going to be using my computer for more than just logic but its great to hear Logic runs well on these machines!
