msi_gtx660.jpgIn exactly one week's time, Nvidia is expected to announce the GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 graphics cards which are expected to be based on Nvidia's GK106 and GK107 GPUs respectively. The GTX 650 will be a step up over the current GT 640 and the GTX 660 will be a step down from the GTX 660 Ti.

We've already written a fair share about both models already, but what now appears to be the real specifications of the GTX 660 have turned up on the interweb, courtesy of a leaked MSI presentation slide. As such, we know for certain that the retail GTX 660 will be different to the OEM parts, as the two are clearly based on different GPUs. The OEM version based on the GK104 GPU (the same as the GTX 660 Ti) features 1152 CUDA cores/shaders, whereas the retail version based on the GK106 GPU sports 960 CUDA cores/shaders.

msi_gtx660_spec.jpgThat said, the clock speeds, at least for MSI's N600 PE 2GD5 will be a fair bit higher with a base core clock of 980MHz compared to a mere 823MHz for the OEM cards. The boost clock is is set to 1032MHz vs. 888MHz and the memory is clocked at an effective speed of 6008MHz vs 5800MHz for the OEM cards. The GTX 660 will also come with 2GB vs. 1.5 or 3GB for the OEM cards, although both models sport the same 192-bit memory interface as the GTX 660 Ti. Apart from these changes, we're looking at a card that's physically the same as the GTX 660 Ti, although some manufacturers such as Asus according to additional leaked pictures, are using a larger PCB, just as with some GTX 660 Ti cards. The rated power usage is said to be dropping by 10W to 140W compared to the GTX 660 Ti.

asus_gtx660.jpgAs for the GTX 650, we should expect a much smaller card, similar in design to the GeForce GT 640 with which is shares the same GK107 GPU. As such we're looking at the same 384 CUDA cores/shaders, 16 ROPS and 1GB of memory, but the big thing here is that Nvidia has fitted the GTX 650 with GDDR5 memory instead of DDR3 memory and as such the memory speed jumps from 1800MHz to 5000MHz. The GPU has also been given a boost in clock speed from 900MHz to 1058MHz according to the rumours. Interestingly the rated power usage is expect to stay at the same 65W as the GT 640.

gtx_650.jpgSome claimed benchmarks have also leaked courtesy of a Chinese website, although we'd take these numbers with a pinch of salt. There's really nothing unexpected here, with the GeForce GTX 660 Ti being the clear leader, although the GTX 650 doesn't really impress and it should really have been the GTS 650 as suggested earlier. Price wise the GTX 650 is expected to retail for $129-149 with the GTX 660 coming in at $229-249 and as such the GTX 650 Ti should slot in somewhere between the two, both in terms of performance and price. Keep in mind that neither card is expected to hit retail until the 22[SUP]nd[/SUP] of September though, so this part remains unchanged from earlier rumours.

I do have to say that these new NVIDIA cards are great! Bought about 5 of them in the past 2 weeks. Nothing but Success !!
Love the 660Ti on my personal rig, just hope we could get 3 monitors working on it from the GPU.

Wishing I waited a little bit to get the 650 with DD5 ram for my dads rig but, hey the 640 still rocks.

Had issues installing CAD programs but after CUDA 5.0 update some issues went away.

Thanks Guys!

So on a scale of one to ten, based off of previous GTX 6xx cards experiences, how easy do u guys say the GTX 650 and 660 will be to setup ? OOB or hell-staking pain ?

As OOB as you can gets. The GTX 660Ti worked OOB with boot flag GraphicsEnabler=No. When doing MultiBeast make shore GraphicsEnabler=No is selected and you will always boot in to the system if everything els is ok.

I have an ASRock H77M-ITX for the time being. No DSDT and when it boots the system at the apple logo the spinner does not even appear. It shows the apple logo and right in to OS. Def the fastest booting system I have built, of course with the help of a SATAIII SSD.

Can't wait for the new Z77 miniITX to drop. yummmmmy!

but I heard from the folks in the 660Ti Thread that FCP X has issues with 660 Ti cards and to me that's a deal breaker

@MAD AUDI SCIENTIST: Let me get this straight: you have an ASUS board and need no DSDT? And everything works? Always thought the "no DSDT" bonus was only for Gigabyte boards, would be great if there suddenly were more options for lazy builders like me. :)

+1. Was it an OOB install like for a gigabyte MB ? What issues did you have to face?

Well the ASUS is UEFI also, so I took a chance because my GA-H67N-USB3-B3's LAN stopped working so I tried the ASRock H77M-ITX for an even exchange.
At first I had very long boot times but, I flashed the UEFI from 1.0 to 1.1 and now its boots up blazing fast with no spinner at apple boot screen. I do have to point out there is some issue with Screens not waking up after i put the machine to sleep. Sleep works, but the screens for some reason don't wake up and I think its a known issue here on the forum. I think its a GTX 660 Ti issue but, could be wrong. I do have to point out that I put a GT640 with an older GA-Z67XP-UD4 with updated UEFI and it does not have the screens wake from sleep issue that my GTX 660Ti does. I have not had enough time to test as to why no screens don't come back after wake because I hardly use Sleep anyway, but even I like to have a 100% working machine at one point or another. I will be getting the GIGABYTE Z77 mini ITX as soon as it hits the shelfs. Any how experimenting is good you will only learn new things!

Ya I was reading that thread also. First I would ask the guys who are having problems to see if they updated to 5.0 CUDA from Nvidia. Then see if there are FinalCut issues. My pops is an architect that now is a Mac freak and i built him a machine with a GT640 and he had to update to 5.0 CUDA to be able to install AutoCAD.

There are lots of variables my friend, best advice I can give is buy one from a place that has a friendly return policy and test it out for yourself.

I love my GTX 660Ti, just want 3 screens running simultaneously but, not just yet.
