Hi there,

I'm in the process of putting together a new system to use with Lion (UniBeast). I've just bought my mother board (Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3P-B3) which has no built in WiFi.

Anyway I have no access to Ethernet as this machine is going to be used in my room (in the basement), so I need a WiFi solution.

I'm tempted to do this: http://x86wifi.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-to-build-your-own-real-airport-card.html as I already have the mini PCI adapter card with antennas, so all I need is an airport card. However after searching for a bit on the bay, all I can seem to dig up are used cards, e.g: http://bit.ly/z9XMhp and http://bit.ly/zyYd6X. Would it be a good idea to pursue this? I noticed that there are more than one available on the eBay pages, so that is probably a good sign.

The alternative as far as I can tell, is to just buy a generic USB WiFi dongle of amazon etc. which claims to be compatible with OS X, but I don't know how much luck I'd have that option. I was thinking something like this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001KOTDDU/?tag=tonymacx86-21

Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dan

all I can seem to dig up are used cards,
I bought a used one. I'm fine with it, coz I know it was pulled from a real Apple product.

Thanks for the advice,

I went with a used airport card as it seemed to make the most sense. Also as far as I can tell, the Dell card wouldn't have fitted in my Mini-PCI to PCI adapter.

I bought this card:

And placed it in the Mini PCI-e adapter and it works great. I used two of the three antenna for wifi and then built the bluetooth card out of an old Powerbook G4 and connected it to the third antenna. I haven't done extensive testing yet but all is working well.

Good luck

...And Wifi range is very good with the above setup so basement application should be good.

I should be fine, my router is actually at the top of the stairs, but I can't convince my parents to let me route an Ethernet cable through the wall and downstairs. Still I've been using WiFi on my PC and MacBook Air for ages and it's never been an issue.
