As a followup, I should mention I updated to 10.10.2. As soon as I finished the reboot after the installation, the trackpad started acting crazy again. Checking the box for "ignore accidental input" was already unchecked, as discussed previously in this thread. Rechecking it didn't make it better.
Taking a chance, based on what I had been reading in the forums when people have problems, I used kext wizard to rebuild permissions and cache, and rebooted. (I should mention that the ignore accidental input is still unchecked). After the kext wizard steps, the trackpad started working properly again in 10.10.2. I hope this helps if anyone is struggling.
