I originally built my Hackintosh in late 2011/early 2012, based on a Gigabyte Z68 motherboard and a Sandy Bridge i3 processor, using Intel HD3000 graphics, running Lion. Over time, I have:
  • replaced a dead SSD;
  • replaced a dead PSU;
  • added the hybrid SSHD for more space for my /Users partition;
  • upgraded the CPU to a Sandy Bridge i5;
  • upgraded the RAM from 4x4GB 1333MHz to 2x8GB 1600MHz;
  • and gone from Lion to Mountain Lion to Mavericks to Yosemite to El Capitan.
I decided it was time for a more significant upgrade, so in the past two weeks I've upgraded my graphics card, monitor, motherboard, and CPU. Because I've replaced so much of it I consider it a new build. The only things left from my original build are the case, RAM, and optical drive.

Through all of this, I never had to reinstall OS X (except when my original SSD died about a week after I finished the first build - an example of why OCZ went bankrupt).

This most recent upgrade went fairly smoothly, thanks to me doing my homework and reading the useful information pertinent to my hardware on this great forum! I ran into one problem with the MSI motherboard - at first it would always reboot right after the Apple screen. But I did a little research and found out I needed to update the BIOS so I could disable the MSR config lock, then it booted right up.

Now I've replaced this rig with a new Kaby Lake-based system; this one has been wiped clean, reinstalled with Sierra, and I plan to use it as a test bed for installing High Sierra - the beta if I get to it before it's released! :lol:

Hi nobodynose, when I was doing my initial research into my first build I was attracted to your nonprofit build for ease of setup and cost. I'd like to send you a PM but theres a ridiculous 75 post requirement. Anyway, my system ended up being a little different, but I did use the GA H81M-HD2 MB. While you seemed to have no issues I've had a few with not being able to get sound after wake and, more importantly, my USB drivers are all slow. If I use the USB 2.0 ports ill get occasionally lag, but anything plugged into the USB3.0 ports will create massive lag & unresponsiveness. I've tried a variety of simple fixes to no avail. Do you have any idea of where I could look? It doesnt seem like a lot of people use the H81M-HD2 so I'm turning to you and hoping you have some suggestions. Thank you for your time.

There is a reason for the PM post requirement.

i have problems getting the wifi and bluetooth to work. based on some reading people say it is because of pci-e slots. i tried changing between two available ports but still no joy. the card is working in my previous mootherboard (ASRock H97m-Pro4). this is my setup list:

Motherboard
MSI H97M-G43 (Same as nobodynose's)

CPU
Intel Core i7 4770

GPU
MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

RAM
Kingston HyperX Fury 4GB x 2

SSD
Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB

HDD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB

running Mac OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite with everything working except wifi and bluetooth.
bootloader is clover.

Hi !

Just tried to Hack the same motherbord (MSI H97M-G43).
Did update it to v. 2.8.
Followed thouroughly Tony's recommendation for MSI 97 boards :
http://www.tonymacx86.com/bios-uefi/143167-msi-9-series-motherboards-os-x-setup-configuration.html

Boot on the UniBeast/USB key x. Yosemite,
Then freezes at ±20% of the process. Even with -x.

When -v, last step is when it stops is :

I missed something...

Any idea ?

Are you sure you made the most important config change, which is to set the CFG LOCK to Disabled in the BIOS? What video card are you using?

I strongly recommend using Clover as the bootloader, with this board especially. I know there's a steep learning curve with Clover, but it pays off in system stability, boot time, and fewer problems with future system updates. I am not an expert with Clover, but I'll provide you with my config.plist if it will help. It's attached. Some things you may need to change:

  • If you're not using an Nvidia card with the Web Drivers package, remove "nvda_drv=1" from Boot/Arguments.
  • Change GUI/ScreenResolution to whatever your own monitor supports.
  • Generate your own serial number in SMBIOS/SerialNumber - you can use Clover Configurator for this.

This config.plist already has the following patches applied:
  • toleda's AppleHDA patches for Realtek ALC892 that enable audio and make it so it doesn't break on every system update
  • the external icons patch
  • the TRIM patch

Good luck!

Just curious, did you ever get your Wifi and Bluetooth working? Which Wifi/Bluetooth card are you using?

I'm pleased to report that this system is now running OS X 10.11 El Capitan. It took a few tries for me to get the update right, but it's (mostly) happy now. The only remaining issues are:

  • USB 3.0 devices are not showing up in the device tree, even though they appear to be working fine.
  • My GeForce GTX 750 has 2GB of VRAM, but the system is reporting 0 MB. I don't know what that's about.

Thank you so much for your time !

Sorry not to have shown sooner, bad family issues this year (...)

Nevertheles, my configuration is as follows :
• MSI H97-G43 (firmware v. 2,1 (the latest))
• Intel Core i7-4790 3,6 GHz
• 8 Gb RAM (one piece)
• Intel HD graphics (NO video card)
• 1 recent SATA drive connected

I did follow the simple and clear recommandations from Tony, about MSI BIOS.
Then I've been using Unibeast 6 (clover) with both Yosemite and El Capitan.
I reach instantaneously Unibeast/Clover home screen, but after that,

None works !

Pretty sure, I missed something on this board's bios.

Here is what I get (at best !) in verbose mode :
