Looking into building my first rig and I want a powerful card for editing video and doing 3D animation.
What is more important a good GPU or CPU or both?

I was thinking of a Ivy Bridge i7 QuadCore and some Nvidia chip, not sure what though.

Also, any suggestion for mobo?

For 3d work, the Kepler (6XX) cards are not so good. You'd be better off with a Fermi (5XX) card for that. The Kepler cards basically suck at the double precision math you need for that.

It's not a question of either or for the CPU and GPU. First you need to check the software you plan on using. What works best as far as the GPU can vary widely.

The CPU is bit simpler. Unless you want to go for a socket 2011 MB/Chip (much more money), you want either a 3570k or a 3770k. 3D work is typically heavily threaded so you can benefit from the hyper threading on the 3770k, but if you need to save some money on the CPU. You don't loose that much dropping down to the 3570k.

Max out the ram. It's cheap and you can never have enough.
