First things first
I want to says thanks to this community , i have been reading posts here for a while and i finally decided to try to build a CustoMac by my self and so far i have found here great tools and info for achieving this. I think the most beatifull thing about our "connected" society is the ability and willingness to share knowledge with the rest of the people. This attitude of sharing and helping each other is what can really came to make a difference in this messed-up world we are living on.
Motivation
I work as a graphic designer for the movie industry in my country, and have specific needs about a machine: most of all i need it to be reliable i cant afford to "loose" my machine while filming on location far from home!; but i also needed lots of room for storing files from current and past projects, also speed is important when everything in your job is "urgent as for yesterday" so a good processor and enough memory was a consideration also.
I wanted to upgrade my usual setting wich consist of my old Mac Pro 2008 (a faithful machine, by the way) and my MacBook Pro, but then i realized that i wasnted conviced about the otpions that apple gives me like a portable with a beautiful screen but with the memory soldered to the mbo (!) or an ultra slim imac with no room for more storage or the soon to come new mac pro with lots of thederbolt but not a single drive bay on it.
I wanted to to retain the user-upgradeable capability of my mac pro and i love to do things by my slef so i decided to build my own mac like the rest of you!
Out of the Box
I wanted mi Customac to work as out of the box as possible, i know : "i you want an out of the box Mac, go buy an real Mac", with that in mind i tried to stick as most as possible to the buyers guide and rsearch other posts for compatibility issues of other components but also was importand that i could actually buy this stuff in my country , so i contact local retailers to find my things. I listed the equivalents parts in amazon if enyone needs to use a real link tu buy this components but i bought everything locally.
Making Choices
I choose the GA-Z77X-UP5-TH because i wanted to have as much internal sata drives as possibly (im running 6 drives plus de DVD) and for the TB capability i don have TB peripherals yet as they are expensive and scarce in my country but it seems ill will be the way to go i the future. Most of all i needed the TB because i wanted to conect my ACD without adapters (i used an atlona converter in my macpro to get it into a dvi port) also i liked to have lots of PCIe slots for adding a GPU card later and some more adapters.
I got the i7-3770K because it was the fastest on the list and it gives me the chance to experiment with Overcklocking later (if i figure out how to do ti safelly and i have the guts to do ti!) for this same reason i boguh the cooler master CPU cooler to ensure good temps now and later i was woried about the fit with the enorumos heat-fins on the corsari memory but it is just ok.
I got the tp-link as lots of folks have proven here that its works nativelly (and it does!) same with the firewire PCIe card i didint find the one thelostswede recommended but i made sure the minw had the LSI/Agere System FW643 chip wich seemed to be the most important feature on it too work (and then again it does work out of the box!)
Regarding the bluetooth i dedice to go for de DIY method following lots of online tutorials and i gave some headeaches but i last i got it working by the "diode" method ( i someone is interested i can post the specific steps i needed to do to acomplsih the mission)
I got the fractal core 3000 becuase i was looking for the smallest possible case to fit and atx mobo and at least 6 drives. I need it to be as small (its even smaller than my macpro) and lightweigth ( its about 4.5 kg empty) beacuse the life on location gets harder when you need to carry around tons of bulcky equipment. I wiil make a flight case similar to my ACD's for it wich ill can post if some one wants to look at my ready to go set up.
i Also got lots of fans (the case came with 3 already and i added 3 more) beacause i we are often working in very very hot places and i wanted to ensure good ventilation on the small case
Im planing on add a GPU card but im waiting to have a fully functional customac (and some more money , too!)
The Build
This was my fisrt build ever from scratch and i can say not only was very easy but also fun and educational. I just did two mods to the case: i atached 2 heavy duty handles on the top so is its easier to carry or move and i drilled some hold on the back plate to have more anchoring points to do cable management wich in this fractal case is VERY TIGHT, but i managed to do it pretty well i think...
Installation
I followed the guides to set up BIOS with the minimun changes for it to work , I bought OSX 10.8.4 as it was the one avaiable at the app sotre made my sb installation stick again by the book and i got a pretty fast install,as the install finished i wasnt abe to boot into my new mountain Lion disk but i solved it by booting with -x safe mode an then i could finish installing. Then i use the multibeast recomended settings no DDSt and just realtek driver, ethernet and (all this changed later!) the only thing i have to highlight is that in this mobo you must put the usb install stick in the back usb2 port (it changed later too, after installing usb3 drivers in windows) for it to work and its a most to plug the screen at the vgi port.
Post Installation [things working!]
So i ended up very happy with may new mac that i had made with my own hands and i mean (VERY happy) and i beagn to test the new build to check if a had really made an Out-Of-The-Box Customac. This is what i got:
Audio: works perfect i have two built-in audio out (black and orange ports) headphones out (when connected, of course) and also the out and in working from my ACD connected at usb2 port on the back
Video: Dual screen runing on the HD400 ACD conected to TB port the lower one and acer dislay conected on vgi. Runs pefect
Wifi an ethernet: both worked out of the box! as the tp-link adapter has 3 external antennae the signal is strong. I got some blazing speeds from the ehthernet too, wich is perfect for file tranfer (my home bandwith ISP is about 50mbs, wich helps too)
SATA: all 6 drives work from internall conectros as well as an extra drive for windows (added later) on the marvel gSata port
eSATA: work perfect and fast with my external eSata Drive
FireWire: As i read some people not having a fully functional on board fw 400port i disabled it in BIOS and im runing ont he PCIe Fw card wich works perfect both at 800 and 400 header
Disk burner: is a cheap one, but i can read dvd movies and i allready burned some dvds, so i assume it works fine . Its conected to a iternal sata (not the gsta) an powered via molex to sata adapter as i ran out of sata power conector from my PSU
Bluetooth works fine: trackpad an keyboard links well and im been able to wake from them, also somethimes i can use the KB on BIOS. I just can get my headphones to pair but i suspect is aproblem of the HP as its stopped to pair with other devices too
Airpdrop works like a charm (im on chimera)
Imessages works too
so far so good... but then it came:
Post Installation [things not working: USB3 Isues and the sleep/awake nightmare]
I was able to wake/sleep from menu but not from the energy saver preference pane then i began to notices issues whe carbon copy cloning to a usb3 disk it keept unmointing itself. Then i got to read an read and i reallizaed that the usb3 problem and sleep/awake is a common isue on this mobo so this is a short story of wath i hve tried to fix it:
I have made some clean installs and BIOS modifications since the original one to try to fix this thing:
I didnt install usb 3 drivers from Unibeast
Im runing BIOS F11 as the next one is a beta
i disabled wake on lan both on the bios and on the energy saver pref pane, then i unchecked all options on the energy saver pref pan , didin´t worked either. so i read this post http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-h...tdown-not-working-mountain-lion-10-8-2-a.html which is for 10.8.2, but i decide to give it a try, so i deleted AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext as there was no sleep enabler.kext buy i found AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient.kext, so i deleted too , repaired disk permissions and reboot silt not working, so:
Clean install, again
i decided to try PLJALM repositories posted here http://www.tonymacx86.com/dsdt/99822-gigabyte-dsdt-patch-repository-maciasl-9.html i downloaded maciASL and loaded the repositories. i follow the guide but still no luck, then i repaired disk permissions and reboot. and then i can shut down the machine, but the sleep wasn't working . So i disable vtd as i read in someones post that my 140k chip docent support it anyway bu it didn't did the trick neither. I dont know if maybe was a mystake that i did with the pathc compile process but i tried to follow the guide step by step
Clean install , another one!
so i read: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/97043-ga-z77x-up5-th-sleep-2.html where they suggested the please sleep app, i really wanted to fix it natively, but i downloaded anyway , i launched and it said that it not nit work with some features of the screen saver enabled so i disabled the screen saver and try to sleep before installing the app but i didn't work. so i installed the app and give it a try and i worked! get sleep from the menu and awake with my keyboard. BUT i resulted in a external usb drive expulsed while sleeping.
Next i find Areheps post in this tread and also in Ultrazones master audio built: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-h...-usb3-hub-chip-ga-z77x-ud5h-rev-1-1-mobo.html and http://www.tonymacx86.com/golden-bu...-i7-3770k-32gb-ram-gigabyte-gtx-650-a-11.html where he/she says that could be a firmware problem , so i went ahead and i tried it (had to install windows, by the way!)
I went to the gygabite and via labs sites and i downloaded and instlled all acoording tho Areheps guide: on windows instaled latest chipset drivers, istalled usb3 drivers yes i made sure that i have selected teh good ones for the GA-Z77X-UP5-TH (VL810 chipset) then i ran the Firmare update and it was sucsesfull (v 9.60 now istalled)
Didint solved the sleep issues BUT now i can fully use my back usb3 ports with usb3 or ubs2 devices and charging devices (such as iphone) from from ports too!
Conclusion
[Almost] everything worked out of the box (wich was a relief!) . im just still struggling with Sleep/awake problem, after reading lots of post and builds from arehep, stork, DBP, Ultrazone, BoomR, et al. and looking a bunch of BIOSes screnshoots i still can fix that
ill post my current settings fot BIOS and Mb, as i said only issue is sleep for the moment im living with pleasesleep but i wish not to have to.
one last thng: Arehep and stork didnt agree on waht is better if XHCI auto or smart auto i tried areheps method of login into windows with usb3 devices plugged but not fixed the external hard drives being expulsed during sleep so i went back to smart auto
Update: sleep nightmare is over, the customac can rest!
After having the kind feed back from Wolfie81 i changed the darwake flag to =no (see post #9) and now i have auto and forced sleep working with no issues , no drives ejected, i can wake from BT trackpad an keyboard whit a single touch. So now i can state that all this hardware do work out of the box "...with a little help from my friends..."
Thanks again to this great community! keep on building!
