Comments

I'm completed this config for a friend and it turns out to be very decent and comes around EUR500.

1. Installing Snow Leopard steps
I used the tonymacx86 Snow Leopard Installation Guide for Sandy Bridge systems. Here's a summary:
  • - Set the BIOS
    - Download iBoot, MultiBeast and UpdateHelper from Downloads
    - Boot with iBoot, replace DVD to factory Snow Leopard, boot and install as usual
    - reboot with iBoot, choose OSX partition, this gives you 10.6.3
    - after SL 10.6.3 installs, run UpdateHelper, reboot with iBoot CD again
    - Open 10.6.8 Combo Update, run and restart with iBoot CD again
    - after reboot eject the iBoot CD, and run Multibeast 3.x with the following options:
    [list:2alh9l5k]==> UserDSDT (get DSDT from DSDT database)
    ==> System Utilities
    ==> Audio / ALC889 + AppleHDA Rollback
    ==> Disk / JMicron eSATA
    ==> Misc / USB3.0 Renesas driver
    ==> Network / Lnx2Mac RTL81xxx driver (official one doesn't work for me)
    ==> Bootloader / Chimera 1.4.x
    ==> OSX Tools (optional)

- reboot from HDD and you're DONE with Snow Leopard. here you have a working SL without proper video support (no QE/CI, no full resolution, no HDMI and no DVI). If I had a discrete VGA around I'd be over.
- edit: Add a Sapphire HD6450 515MB (40EUR) passive, and you're done OOB with all three outputs working (DSub, HDMI, DVI). :headbang:

- one single glitch: autosleep does not work as I have an LG DVD in. Disconnecting the DVD makes autosleep work as well. There is a resolution in the forum for this, but I don't care about autosleep, really. Manual sleep works.[/list:u:2alh9l5k]

2. Installing Lion steps
  • - Install 10.7 Lion from the AppStore download, along Tonymacx86's guide with xMove, reboot with no issues.
    - Installed OSX10.7.1 and all updates - rebooted with no issues, but still not full video support and analog video output only
    - Install Multibeast 4.0.2 with audio and networking as before and use MacMini definition to get full resolution AND QE/CI. Standard MB defines the machine as MacPro3,1 (early 2008) with only the DVI working. Macmini definitions give you DVI and HDMI support.
    - remember to disconnect the analog VGA cable and connect a DVI or HDMI cable after reboot as the analog screen will "freeze" just before the desktop
    - patch to latest with software update and you're DONE with Lion, give yourself some claps :clap:

Remarks:
  • - Geekbench around 8200 as I only have a single 4GB DDR3 on 1333MHz. With a dual kit I'd get around 8600 as expected.
    - DSub analog port has no image as the Mac mini definition has only 2 digital outputs. HDMI and DVI are working perfectly
    - sleep not exactly perfect with the DSDT from the database. machine wakes and goes to sleep again if i don't keep pressing some button on the keyboard.

Will continue to seach for perfection.
[edit: my mate was OK with Snow Leopard in the end, so Lion got ditched, and I ended up with a 6450 in the rig]

Re: Budget GA-H67MA-USB3-B3, i5-2500K, HD3000 - Snow Leo to Lion

- Installed 10.7 Lion from the AppStore download, along Tonymacx86's guide with xMove, rebooted with no issues. I had to reinstall the network driver from MultiBeast 3.8.0 to get networking working.

- Installed OSX10.7.1 and all updates - rebooted with no issues, but still not full video support

- Install Multibeast 4.0.2 with audio as before and MacMini definition to get full resolution AND QE/CI. Standard MB defines the machine as MacPro3,1 (early 2008) with only the DVI working. Geekbench 8133 on 32 bit.

Still not working:
- DSub analog port has no image as the Mac mini definition has only 2 digital outputs.
- sleep not exactly perfect with 10.7.1 (I assume it's on OSX bug). the machine only wakes perfectly when I repeatedly press something on the keyboard/mouse for 2-3 seconds. I believe 10.7.2 will fix this as original Macs also have sleep/wake problems.

stopped at this stage. will update if 10.7.2 will be out.

does dual screen works?
thanks

I didn't test both screen at same time, but both outputs work (HDMI, DVI), so I assume they should work together as well. :thumbup:

how is the global performance of the HD3000? Is it better to buy a cheap HD5450 or the HD3000 is good?
thanks

Try it first with HD3000, and if it's not enough then buy a graphics card.

Great write up mate! Exactly what I was looking for :thumbup:

Could you please test if dual monitors work? HDMI + DVI outputs at the same time.
I really love having a dual monitor setup and if I can get dual monitors from onboard graphics I will be stoked, don't really have a need for a GPU

Cheers

What about the audio, have you got HDMI audio ? I have the same board and tried all available info to get the audio out of HDMI without success.

Also, did you get all the audio ports working with Multibeast ? I have tried many times, and done a number of fresh installs but the Applehda in Multibeast4 does not work with this motherboard.
