I plan on dual booting windows this weekend on a separate drive. I will be installing windows via a usb optical drive. Will I run into a problem using an external optical drive?

Thanks.

Not with Windows - it should install just fine with the external USB ODD.
OS X Snow Leopard will not, however.

Sorry, I was a little unclear what I said last time. I actually already have mavericks 10.9.0 installed on my hack. I want to now install windows on a separate drive using a optical drive via usb..

No problem.
Disconnect the OS X drive.
Connect the Windows drive-to-be.
Comnect the USB ODD.
Boot the build and use the F* hotkey to select a boot device.
Select the USB ODD to boot in BIOS. Make sure you do not select the UEFI USB ODD.
Install Windows. Update it, register it. etc.
Reconnect the OS X drive.
Boot to BIOS and set the OS X drive as first in HDD boot order.

Enjoy.
