Not as such, there are other threads where people are trying to get hibernate working though.
I see what you mean now though, that effectively hibernate is like shutdown, rather than sleep. Good luck getting hibernate working though
Been looking at the system.log when sleeping/waking.
When you choose sleep the system actually takes and saves screenshots: for my dual monitor setup:

And those get shown on wake, whilst the graphics card gets woken up etc. It's only when the system fires up the graphics card that the screen garbles. Just double checked that you can ssh in and issue shutdown or whatever even after wake.
Problems may well be more widespread than just hacks using certain nvidia cards:
