New Fusion Drive

Einsteiniac, interested in what you are doing here.

Just wondered if you have read this article on undocumented commands in Corestorage and also looking at the recent comments at the end of the article.

I find it intriguing. http://blog.fosketts.net/2011/08/05/undocumented-corestorage-commands/

I am wondering if some of this undocumented stuff mentioned in this very interesting blog is now more functional under the new updates (the author talks of some of the commands not seeming to work) and might underpin the Fusion Drive creation.

Yeah I actually posted the link to that site in this thread or maybe another I forget now. Also I created my volumes using the methods that one of those commentors posted with. Those comments are new however as there was only the bottom one when I found that article.

While I was searching twitter for any sign of anyone who might have made progress on this, I found a link to this tumblr:

Based on his initial testing, it appears to be working; data appears to be shuffled between SSD and HDD based on accesses.

Mind you, he makes no mention about bootability; his only concern was if data was being prioritized between SSD and HDD.

So essentially the same results I was getting. I am going to try to remake the setup again and reinstall and see if I can get it to boot. I really don't see a reason why it wouldn't boot as it get the root device it runs a fsck on the disk and then attemtps to actually boot and thats where it freaks. Going to try single user mode too and see.

I prefer things the simple way, I just install the OS and software on my SSD and move my home folder to the larger drive. If I want something I use often to load faster, I just put it on the SSD. This all just seams like a lot of fuss for something that is really meant for those who have no clue how to organize files nor have the capability to upgrade their system easily.

More like people who don't care to spend their free time managing files but rather doing things that are actually productive.

Sorry Tony, didn't see your post.

Btw.: I will actually not use Fusion drive on a Mac as HFS+ is not really keeping my data safe (see my HFS+ fails miserably demo). Using two HFS+ disks concatenated just increases the risk of data failure. And TimeMachine as backup has failed me as well in the past.
I’m using ZFS to store my data ;-)
Addition 1: The SSD is a old Vertex2 so nothing Apple specific. Addition 2: Mounting the drive with “-o noatime” does not change the caching behaviour, which is good. Addition 3: I was using plain old 10.8.2, nothing special.

Nfilg and Tonymac beat me to this by about an hour. I'm really excited about this working. I'm going to try to add it in to my Custo Mini Deluxe that I finished building last night.

I just need to find a system fan controller and SSD.

I'll post updates once done and let everyone know how it goes.

Chris

Got it up and running using clover

Used the same commands as this guy http://jollyjinx.tumblr.com from another installation, and used CCC to put the files back. Then i mounted the EFI partition and copied Clover to that.

So it must be a problem with Chimera...
