Hard shutdowns kill all platter drives - none of them can possibly be immune due to the way they read and write data. I have had the same thing happen to me several times - its not nice. Ive been lucky and have always been able to rescue the installation with a fresh install and migration assistant. HDDs are easily corrupted - one day everyones luck runs out.
Generally I find all the main HDD brands to be good and reliable. There have been bad batches and problems with all brands at one time or another. Different people have had different experiences and preferences are often based on their own or someone they trust experience. Use what you prefer if you have a preference.
