When I built my Mack in 2011 I bought 1600 even though I think 2000 was available, and maybe higher.

Personally, I just felt I didn't need anything too much higher as 16gb was already such a huge jump up in power.

Basically, I just saved a little bit of money by not buying 'the best' at the time.

No reason the higher speed ram won't work.

Well, for some, there are issues. It's not a hackintosh problem, though, it's a motherboard/processor issue. Many LGA2011 boards just have trouble running 32gb or more of ram at high speeds. Also, the cost of 32gb kits really moves up fast when you go beyond 1600. For many people that cost isn't worth the performance gains. I'm not sure where the link went, but there was a comparison on anandtech that showed the gains were very minimal. If I find it, I'll edit my post with the link.
