So this is kind of dumb and minor, and I'm super happy to have my Lion build working and fully functional, but it's a bit annoying.

Basically the system keeps checking the DVD drive, even when there's no disc, and it makes a noise.

Happens once maybe every 10 or 20 minutes.

Is there a way to disable these drive-checks without having to disable the drive entirely?

That explains what that noise is...

as far as i know, you only have 2 choices:

1- put in a dvd inside. this works for me.
2- buy another model of dvd player. im using lg and it keeps on checking, but my friend who is using liteon, doesnt have any problems.

Happens to me too. It's irritating as well and happened in snow leopard and now lion. There has got to be a way to change it especially if one manufacturer works and the other doesn't.

I have a Sony Optiarc and it doesn't have this problem. $25.

I have an LG optical drive with this problem. I saw on another thread, that un-checking the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" box in the Energy Saver preference would stop the OD from the reset cycling. It works on this machine.
