intel_logo.jpgRemember the Core i3-3225? Well, it’s officially launched, alongside another 15 desktop siblings and five mobile relatives. It looks like Intel decided to release just about every model it had in store yesterday, with the exception of the odd mobile SKU.

We’ll cover the new mobile models first, as they apply in a much lesser regards to CustoMacs, but we might see Apple making use of a couple of models. First up we have to mobile Celerons, the 887 - 17W TDP, dual core, 1.5GHz - and the B830 - 35W TDP, dual core, 1.8GHz - both based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture and products that are fairly uninteresting on a whole. The CPU’s are priced at $86 each.

Next up we have the Core i7-3740QM - 45W TDP, four cores, eight threads, 2.7GHz, 6MB cache - and the Core i7-3840QM - 45W TDP, four cores, eight threads, 2.8GHz, 8MB cache - both of which we might see as CPU upgrades in the 15-inch retina MacBook Pro. The i7-3740QM is priced at $378, with the i7-3840QM coming in at $568. The final new mobile CPU is the Core i7-3940XM or Extreme Edition - 45W TDP, four cores, eight threads, 3GHz, 8MB cache - which is a whopping $1,096.

Now to the interesting part, the desktop CPUs. Starting from the bottom we have a wide range of Celeron models based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge core, namely the G465 - 65W TDP, single core, two threads, 1.9GHz, 1.5MB L3 cache $37 - the G550T - 35W TDP, two cores, 2.2GHz, 2MB L3 cache, $42 - and the G555 - 65W TDP, two cores, 2.7GHz, 2MB L3 cache, $52.

These are followed by four Pentium models, but the interesting thing here is that Intel has launched its first Ivy Bridge based budget processors in the shape of the G2100T and the G2120. Spec wise, these aren’t exactly mind blowing, but for someone on a tight budget, these might be interesting CustoMac alternatives. Starting with the Sandy Bridge models, the specs are as follows, G645T - 35W TDP, two cores, 2.5GHz, 3MB L3 cache, $64 - G645 - 55W TDP, two cores, 2.9GHz, 3MB L3 cache, $64 - G2100T - 35W TDP, two cores, 2.6GHz, 3MB L3 cache, $75 - and finally the G2120 - 55W TDP, two cores, 3.1GHz, 3MB L3 cache, $86.

Next up we have the first Ivy Bridge based Core i3 processors, starting with two $117 modesl, the Core i3-3220 - 55W TDP, two cores, four threads, 3.3GHz, 3MB L3 cache - and the Core i3-3220T - 35W TDP, two cores, four threads, 2.8GHz, 3MB L3 cache. Next we have the eagerly awaited Core i3-3225, the only “budget” model so far with HD 4000 graphics - 55W TDP, two cores, four threads, 3.3GHz, 3MB L3 cache - and priced at $134. Finally we have the Core i3-3240 - 55W TDP, two cores, four threads, 3.4GHz, 3MB L3 cache - and i3-3240T - 35W TDP, two cores, four threads, 29GHz, 3MB L3 cache - both priced at $138.

This brings us to the somewhat surprising introduction of four new Core i5 models, although admittedly no launch date had been leaked for these models, so it makes as much sense to launch them now as at a point in the future. First up we have the Core i5-3330 - 77W TDP, four cores, 3GHz, 3.2GHz Turbo, 6MB L3 cache, $182 - then we have the i5-3330S - 65W TDP, four cores, 2.7GHzGHz, 3.2GHz Turbo, 6MB L3 cache, $177 - the i5-3335S - 65W TDP, four cores, 2.7GHz, 3.2GHz Turbo, 6MB L3 cache, HD 4000 graphics, $194 - and finally the i5-3350P - 69W TDP, four cores, 3.1GHz, 3.3GHz Turbo, 6MB L3 cache, no integrated graphics, $177.

Besides the Core i3-3225, the Core i5-3335S is an interesting CPU, as it’s both a fairly low TDP model, so it’s suitable in a mini-ITX build, but it also sports Intel HD 4000 graphics. Sadly Intel doesn’t offer the S SKUs in general retail, although we’ve seen other S models on sale in Europe and via some smaller retailers in the US. The Core i5-3350P might also be an interesting alternative as long as you don’t mind using a discrete GPU at all times. That said, the Turbo speed boost is disappointing compared to slightly more expensive alternatives.

Keep in mind that this is Intel list pricing and not retail pricing and as such retail boxed CPU’s might be more expensive due to the inclusion of a CPU cooler among other things. Intel also reduced the pricing of some older models by between 13-19 percent, although the only remotely interesting CustoMac CPU would be the Core i3-2130 that went down from $138 to $117.

When do you think they might become available to us. Like for example on newegg?

Over the next few days, most of the retail chips are already on sale, with the exception of the Core i3-3225 for some reason...

It's available on amazon (U.S.).

the QM's look like made for apple laptops :)
some new cheaper mini's could be discerned too.

the other look like media servers, corporate excel chugging and low buget builds.

it is nice to see the power rating going around 50W.
