Intel announced the latest 5th generation dual core Core-i mobile CPUs, called Broadwell-U at CES today. Highlights of these latest ultra low voltage CPUs include 14 nanometer die process, lower wattage, and higher integrated graphics potential.

Intel's 5th generation mobile CPUs seem to be perfect for the rumored 12" MacBook Air with Retina display. The CPUs would surely provide more oomph for the higher density screens, along with better battery life. Look for laptops and all-in-one desktops sporting Broadwell-U chips to show up in the market in the next few months.

The CPU SKUs indicate 4 levels of graphics power, a 28 watt with Iris Pro 6100 graphics, mid-level 15 watt with HD 6000 or HD 5500 graphics, and a low-end 15 watt with Broadwell HD graphics. Hit up Anandtech's intro below for full CPU specs.

This is the initial release of Broadwell, and is only mobile, with desktop class Broadwell K and Broadwell E/EP CPUs are expected later this year using Socket 1150 and Socket 2011-v3 respectively. Also waiting in the wings are the new 10 series chipsets using Skylake CPUs, which will likely launch late 2015 or early 2016.

1366 v2? I think you mean 2011-3.

I want to also add that the 12" MacBook Air will support a single Type-C USB 3.1 port which poses several outcomes as well as WiDi technology in the CPUs.

  • Apple may ditch Thunderbolt completely and compromise with USB 3.1 which is capable of speeds up to 10Gps, equivalent to Thunderbolt 1.0. This will help reduce cost since Thunderbolt tech is rather expensive and not very popular.
  • The MacBook Air may charge it's battery via the USB 3.1 port eliminating the Mag-Safe connector.
  • Broadwell CPUs provide Intel WiDi technology which can stream wirelessly to a display, meaning no need to connect a cable to the PC or Mac. We could see a new Apple Cinema Display using WiDi.
