Hackintosh Reboots Randomly With Graphic Intensive Use

Not open for further replies.
I'm almost giving up and installing windows on these machines. Seriously... It's really frustrating! Nothing solves this problem... Maybe when NVIDIA releases new drivers for Mojave?

Just throwing this in here: I started having similar problems with PP and AE after installing a PCIe SATA expansion card and x3 HDD’s. Turned out that my PSU (650w Seasonic FOCUS Gold) wasn’t powerful enough to cope with all my power hungry hardware. During heavy use, the CPU/GPU spikes kept knocking out the PSU causing hard reboots.

@brunomotter
Your hardware setups generally look lighter than mine, so perhaps you are having a different issue, but it may be power related.

@Cfreak
Not sure of your overall setup, but maybe look into your power use and PSU for issues.

Here’s my OS and drivers info:

MacOS : 10.13.6
NVIDIA : 387.10.10.10.40.105
CUDA : 396.148

Well, I really doubt it’s power related. First because it does not happen in Windows. Second because the Vega 56 ia even more power hungry than the gtx 1070 and it is 100% stable with the Vega. Anyway, thanks for trying to help figuring this out! My hope is that when/if NVIDIA releases drivers for Mojave this issue will be corrected as I cannot afford for 2 more Vegas now and simply throw my gtxs in the garbage can.

+1 on this problem..
Major pain in the bum. I think it's related to the GPU, but not the actual load of the CPU, as I've been doing some superheavy lifting on the GPU without crashing. But it will often restart when I'm in full screen I noticed..

You should fill out your profile, brunomotter, at least for your non-Coffee Lake boxes, but this post might be more useful for Cfreak.

There are many factors that go into a particular setup working right, but I think you might consider the Clover/kexts/drivers situation, especially with four boxes and only one Vega card. For me, because FCPX is so much better with AMD GPU's re OpenCL, I'll go back when they come out with cards after Vega. AP/AE, I believe, benefits from CUDA.

I tried your demonstration: "...open Adobe Premiere and After Effects at the same time with no projects loaded, just the softwares themselves and running Unigine Valley and some youtube tabs in safari." I use HFS+, if that's relevant. All was fine, no reboots and all smooth, for the time I ran it, though my Valley numbers suffered:

So, for you and for Cfreak who saw an earlier post (thanks!), I want to share recent changes in kexts, drivers, and Clover that have made my system very stable. For Coffee Lake, you might google "ramblings of a hackintosher" and on the page scroll down to Coffee Lake. My current kexts and drivers:

Two important new drivers replacing older drivers are available directly from their sources:

AptioMemoryFix.efi --AptioFixPkg R23 RELEASE --This driver replaces previous Aptio fixes
https://github.com/acidanthera/AptioFixPkg/releases

ApfsDriverLoader.efi — v2.0.3 (was v1.3.2 on 8/8) --This driver replaces Apple's apfs.efi and it is updated
very often

You might try them out if you haven't. This is my last High Sierra post. Hope something's useful!

I've upgraded clover to 4741, installed AptioMemoryFix and ApfsDriverLoader from clover configurator, and I´m EXPORTING from PP 2018, at the same time playing 4 videos on chrome/youtube, and IT IS NOT REBOOTING! this used to reboots my hackintosh. Can anyone else try? GTX 980. thanks

I still have this issue. The way to avoid it for now is to make sure to use SOFTWARE mode during export to lets say H264 and then DO NOT move the mouse or do anything else. I would even say close Chrome. It exports fine for me if I don't do anything. Which sucks because these systems are powerful enough that it can handle exporting and doing other things.

This is 100% Apple and Adobe related, most likely Apple is the bigger culprit. It's their AMD drivers that are out of whack.

I installed CC2019 on the side for testing and the same thing happens.

Doubt it's power related, I have a Platinum 1000w EVGA PSU and I'm running everything stock (No OC).

This is AMD related.

This is AMD related, not NVIDIA.

Also iMac Pro 1,1 related since it DOES NOT have an iGPU....there's something going on with AMD + Apple with Premiere Pro.

What do you mean by AMD? I have Intel, I have had one reboot since the drivers I updated

still getting reboots :(

My build even reboots when I'm using Chrome and Preview. So not quite sure where is the problem.
