This is odd... I have 3 identical systems, they've been running great for the past year, newly installed ML 10.8.2 on all, everything good for the past couple of weeks. I upgraded the memory from 8GB Vengeance to 16GB Vengeance, OSX runs great. I booted into the second drive which has Win7 SP1 on it on one of the machines, and it seemed like it had gone south... very slow bootup, slow response, jerky mouse cursor, absolutely terrible unusable performance.
I had some new drives, and two of the systems didn't have a Windows drive in them, so I decided to build up 2 new drives before I tried to figure out what was wrong with the one that already had a Windows drive in it. The first drive I build up came up fine, has good performance, what I would expect from this install. The second one had problems installing, installation was extremely slow, at one point I thought it failed and was stuck, so I started all over again and it dragged on for well over an hour and seemed to free at the same point. I got distracted doing something else, and when I came back later it had gotten through the preliminary installation and was waiting for me to personalize it. When I got back to work on it, it was slow, laggy, the mouse cursor was jerky, just like the very first drive that I thought had developed problems. Task manager showed a lot of excessive CPU use, but I couldn't tie it to any process.
Lacking any other good ideas, I decided to install that slow drive in the system that had a good Windows installation... it worked great there! Well, after thinking about it I remembered that this system hadn't been upgraded to 16GB of memory yet like the other two. I put the slow Windows drive back in the system it was originally in, pulled the 16GB Vengeance memory out and installed 8GB Vengeance memory, booted it up and it works absolutely fine! I haven't tried the first drive that I thought had a problem, but the symptoms are identical, but I'm pretty certain I haven't used it since I upgraded the memory to 16GB, and I'd bet money that there's nothing wrong with that drive either.
I don't get it... the board specs say it supports 16GB, 16GB works fine with OSX 10.8.2, but it won't work with Windows 7 which should easily support that much memory, and a lot more...
Has anyone every had something like this happen, or have any idea what's going on here? I really would like to run 16GB in these boxes...
Thanks for any ideas...
