I have Geforce GTX 660 as well , is there any advantage of running with nvidia drivers ?

My results w/ 4790k @ 4.7, 16gb 1866 DDR3 and R9 290x 4GB @ 1030 MHz

Radeon HD 7970 2GB Tahiti 0x6798 - Inject ATI = NO 75.13 12250

Is that right? I can get expect an OpenCL performance of 12000+ from a 7970 which I can acquire for US$120? Instead of a R9 290x which gives just 14000 for double the price?

Is there any other card that will give a better bang for buck OpenCL performance?

Note, this is not for games, it for OpenCL calculations so FPS doesn't matter.

@sana1234,

I tried the NVidia drivers on Mavericks with a single GTX 660 card and never found much difference in the results. There was also the issue of having to wait for NVidia to churn out the next set of drivers for each OS update, so haven't bothered with them on Yosemite or El Capitan.

FYI I have two GTX 660 cards installed, but only the first is connected to a screen, using DP-DP cable running at 2560 x 1440 res. This has boosted the benchmark scores to double that of a single card in most instances.

It is indeed seeming strange that an old 7970 is outperforming some of the other cards listed... Also this speaks nothing to Cuda vs open Cl in terms of real world performance which would be very application dependent. (hence the sub par results for the Nvidia cards in the list)

I'm getting ready to build my first hackintosh for the purpose of film editing (I use Avid and Premiere primarily/not a fan of FCPX) and am thinking of going with the GA-Z170X-UD5 TH mobo.

I already own a 7970, but am considering a Titan x or 980ti to drive 4k for my client monitor since Premiere works better with Cuda than open CL... Haven't researched Avid's 4k hardware requirements yet though.

Love the Cinemark Benchmark. Thanks for sharing :).

Great chart. Wish I saw this about a month ago before I grabbed an Nvidia GT 740 2GB DDR5. Thing worked for a short time initially but has had nothing but problems. Apparently there is an issue with the Nvidia Web driver and the drivers for Wacom tablets. Kernel panics out the wazoo!

Now that I see this chart and note such a small difference between the GT 740 and the built-in HD 4600 video, seems its not even worth the headache to work through the issues. Thanks.
