I found the solution for the stepper error in this post. Change the system definition from Mac Pro 3.1(default) to iMac 13.1.

You have to install the AppleACPIPlatform.kext from 10.9.5. There's a rollback option under System in Multicast. My system was getting stuck there as well and when I installed the older version, my system was able to boot just fine.
